WE NEED YOU!

We have some volunteers but we need your donations today!
What for you say?
Exhibitor's Table cost is $350 plus helping volunteers with lodging and food expenses.
Thank you!

MO School Counselors Association
Earn professional development points with MCRA, NCRA, and NVRA for volunteering to man a table, give demonstrations, and talk to counselors about
Court Reporting!

The Missouri School Counselors Association conference is much like our conventions where we go to learn more about our profession.  So they will have speakers, and then will visit an exhibitors' room or booths.  That's where we'll set up and talk to counselors and give demonstrations.

The more we educate the counselors, the better the chance of a counselor suggesting court reporting to someone who wants a career in our career cluster!

Can't give your time?  We still need you!!  Would you consider making a donation to help pay for the fees and expenses?

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO MAN A TABLE AT A
HIGH SCHOOL CAREER  FAIR?
Two people preferred:  One to talk and one to demonstrate.
Candy jars are always a plus. And students have to take a selfie with the machine and post to get a piece of candy.
Exposure on the web is an awesome thing ... well, positive court reporting exposure :-)
October is the beginning of career fairs.  Let me know if you're interested, and I will hook you up with your local school!

GET TO KNOW THE BOARD

This month get to know ...

Hi, everyone!  My name is Robin Cox, and I'm an official reporter in St. Louis County.  I am currently serving as Board Secretary and as a member of the Student Affairs Committee of MCRA.  I've been reporting since 1993, and during that time I have been able to utilize my skills as a freelance and official reporter, as well as a CART provider.

In my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends and my husband,Tom, and our four "furkids."  I feel so fortunate to have fallen into such an awesome career.  I actually missed my first day of class, because I was enrolling in the program and knew NOTHING about court reporting except what I had seen in TV - and we all know how accurate that is! - but after I got over the initial shock of seeing that funny-looking contraption, I was hooked.   After 23-plus years, I still LOVE this profession and the versatility it provides!

Liebe has been an Official Court Reporter for 6 years, the last 2 years being in Liberty, Missouri for the Honorable Janet Sutton.

Before becoming an official, she was a freelance reporter for 5 years.   She holds state certifications in Missouri, Kansas and Hawaii, and national certifications as a Registered Merit Reporter, Realtime Systems Administrator, and as a Federal Certified Realtime Reporter.

She has a passion for realtime and loves to educate judges, attorneys, and other court reporters on its usefulness and benefits in the courtroom. She maintains a YouTube channel with educational videos on general court reporting topics and also specifically related to the Stenovations/DigitalCAT products.

Outside of court reporting, she is the mother of two great kids who still think she is the best mom in the entire world. She has an addiction to practicing yoga, and is in the process of obtaining a teaching certification in aerial yoga. And, she loves singing in bands or karaoke; just give her a microphone and she will definitely make some noise.

"Court Reporting & Captioning Week is not only a week to celebrate who we are and what we do; it is also your chance to give back. Participate by spreading the word about our fabulous profession and the opportunities that await those who enter the judicial reporting, broadcast and CART captioning, and legal videography fields. You can earn points by attending a career fair, giving a presentation at a school, or hosting a Veterans History Project Day or an A to Z Program. The opportunities are endless. Who will have the new ideas this year? What will you do to take part? Share the excitement, share your passion, change our profession."

Chris Willette

2017-2018 NCRA President

We are all familiar with the findings from the 2013-2014 Industry Outlook Report by Ducker Worldwide that predicts there will be a shortage of 5,500 court reporters over the next several years. We know our numbers are dwindling. We know we need students in our schools, and we know we need students graduating from court reporting programs. Is this challenging? Yes, it is, but we are court reporters, and we face challenges every day.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

Just as colleges and universities engage in athletic rivalries, you can join forces with court reporters and captioners in your state for a little friendly competition across state borders. In our profession, we are silent as we diligently do our jobs, but we really have a lot to say about our great profession. Now is the time to say it. How can we let our voices be heard?

  • Present and demonstrate at high schools or career fairs in our communities
  • Present and demonstrate at guidance counselor conventions in our states
  • Participate in a Veterans History Project Day
  • Participate in and promotion of 2018 Court Reporting & Captioning Week
  • Organize and lead an A to Z Program

WHEN IS THE COMPETITION?

The competition will begin Monday, Aug. 14, 2017. We do not want to waste any time spreading the message about our wonderful profession! Let's get the ball rolling! We will celebrate our successes and award our prizes at the culmination of Court Reporting & Captioning Week, Feb. 10-17, 2018. Please have all of your promotional events turned in to NCRA headquarters by Feb. 23, 2018.

WHERE CAN I FIND MATERIAL FOR A PRESENTATION?

If you're preparing a presentation, there is no need to look any further than the NCRA website to find a wealth of information at your fingertips.

  • NCRA.org/awareness
  • NCRA.org/NCRF
  • DiscoverSteno.com

You can also contact NCRA's Communications Team at [email protected] for additional assistance.

2017-2018 NCSA STATE CHALLENGE

Consider contacting the business education, English, or music department at your local school to set up a presentation. Consider taking along a short transcript to school presentations. Let the students do some play acting so they can experience what goes on in a court proceeding or deposition. Everyone likes to be the judge! If you have an idea that really works well for you and you want to share it with other states or if you are having difficulty getting the ball rolling and you are looking for ideas, email your regional rep or reach out to [email protected]. We are all working together to fill our court reporting and captioning schools with students, and we are all here to help each other.

HOW DO WE DOCUMENT OUR STATE'S ACTIVITIES?

Documenting your presentations or demonstrations is quick and easy.

For the NCSA State Challenge online submission form, go to bit.ly/2tK3YzC, fill in the information, and your event will be entered in the contest.

There is no limit to the number of contest entries your state can have. The greater the number of entries you have, the better the chances your state wins the competition. Did your state, county, and city government offices issue a proclamation commemorating Court Reporting & Captioning Week? Did you participate in a Veterans History Project Day? Did you present at a school, conference, or career fair? Did you organize and teach an A to Z Program? These are all great ways to receive recognition for your hard work, and they're each additional entries for your state in the competition.

Don't stop there, though. Post pictures of your presentations on your state association's website and social media pages. Note that only entries submitted through the online submission form qualify for the competition. Contact  NCRA's Assistant Director of Communications Annemarie Roketenetz at [email protected] for possible inclusion  in the JCR Weekly. Let everyone across the country hear about your successful campaign to promote court reporting and captioning.

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES FOR THE COMPETITION?

The prizes for the competition are tiered. Each entry into the raffle-type competition qualifies for the first prize. Each prize awarded is to be used at the state's discretion, i.e. registrations for the president/delegate, raffle items/fundraising for future conventions, student gifts, et cetera. In addition, there is a grand prize for an individual reporter or captioner.

FIRST PRIZE: Five free webinars.

GRAND PRIZE: A complimentary registration to the 2018 NCRA Convention & Expo will be awarded to the individual reporter or captioner who does the greatest number of school, career day, guidance counselor convention presentations, VHP Days, and/or Court Reporting & Captioning Week events. In case of a tie, the prize will go to the reporter or captioner who completed and submitted their presentations first.

GOOD LUCK! LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT YOUR GREAT CAREER

STUDENTS CORNER ...

Students, Improve your practice/study mindset!
-Positive thinking before and during the test is important.  Aim to throw out any negative thoughts and focus in on the things you do best, the keys, the words, the combinations and shortcuts that work best for you. By avoiding catastrophic thinking, as some psychologists call it, you can actually mentally get through the test with less anxiety, less fear, less apprehension.
-Keep a running list of your accomplishments thus far!  Look at it often.  Remind yourself of what you have conquered and push forward.
-Two steps back and one step forward is OKAY in this field of study.  Know that this WILL happen.
-And by all means, if at all possible, DO NOT focus on how far up the hill you still have to climb to get to final completion/graduation/certification, but focus in on how far up the hill you have already come and give yourself a pat on the back!  It's a journey, not a race!  Good Luck
