Regional Decision Makers Actively Support Local Job Development
The Southeast Recycling Development Council reports fielding an increased number of inquiries from economic development and elected officials eager to get current information when it comes to recycling and its successful economic impact. "Who doesn't want to learn more about a steadily growing sector providing good paying, green jobs for Americans? This is encouraging news in a discouraging economy and the research to support it keeps coming in," says SERDC Policy Director Will Sagar. The demand for more details has resulted in the development of the Recycling & the Economy Symposium, October 26-27 in Memphis, Tenn.

Keep America Beautiful and Partners Launch "Recycling Is No Joke" Contest for American Recycles Day
Have you ever thought, "Recycling doesn't make a difference." We hate to be blunt, but you are wrong. It benefits our economy, creates jobs, saves energy and protects natural resources. So help Keep America Beautiful and its partners show that "recycling is no joke" by participating in the first-ever America Recycles Day (ARD) video contest, open to contestants of all ages. Contestants are eligible to win $1,000 if they can make the judges (and the public) laugh.
The video contest runs through October 21, 2011. Submissions can be anything ranging from a one-liner, to a comic strip or skit about recycling, but the video must show recycling in a positive, humorous manner. The video needs to be uploaded to the ARD YouTube page by October 21, 2011, as a response to a short video that explains the competition. The ARD Video Committee will vote on the top 10 winners and upload them to a YouTube playlist on our ARD page by November 8, 2011. During the following week, the public will pick the winning videos by clicking the "like" button associated with their favorite video. Voting ends on America Recycles Day. Full rules found here.

NC Recyclers Expand Adding Local Jobs
The Polymer Network (Eden) began operations in Rockingham County in June 2009. They are currently a collection and redistribution operation that recycles LDPE clear film, clear stretch wrap and rigid PP and HDPE. With baling capacity, the company is working out of a 75,000 square foot facility with five employees. The company's expansion plans include a pelletizing line and a larger facility in North Carolina. With the expansion, the company would provide more value-add for their incoming plastic stream, and grow jobs for up to 30 additional employees.

Maine Plastics (Apex) of Illinois opened a plastic processing facility in Apex and has begun operations in an 110,000-square foot facility and with 13 employees. The company specializes in the processing and resale of plastic resins that are left over in manufacturing processes or from discarded products from the pharmaceutical, automobile and other consumer products industries.
Maine Plastics envisions growing the Apex facility to 15 to 20 employees over the next year as demand grows. A contract with long-term client Becton, Dickinson and Co. prompted the expansion into North Carolina. The Apex plant will have the capacity to handle about 100 million pounds of plastics a month.

Electronic Recyclers International (Badin), based in Fresno, Calif., has announced plans to open a new electronics recycling facility at Alcoa's former aluminum smelting plant in Badin. The company plans to hire between 20 and 30 employees and projects to have more than 150 employees by the end of 2012. ERI operations began in July 2011 at a temporary site, with the Badin site operational by January 2012.
