Allies United for Children
Allies United for Children is a private non-profit organization that provides mentoring and support services to high-risk children in San Francisco. (The non-profit identification number is 94-3398021). The children served come from families with histories of violence, neglect, and poverty. They are at high risk for teenage pregnancy, involvement with gangs and criminal activity, educational and economic failure, and serious substance abuse. They live in San Francisco's poorest neighborhoods and in public housing developments. Allies United for Children provides the children in the program with nurturing relationships with responsible adults who teach positive values. The mentors create links between the children and other community-based organizations to promote attending school, avoiding early parenting and the criminal justice system, and earning high school diplomas or graduation equivalency diplomas. The mentors work toward specific achievable outcomes with each child and serve as a liaison between the family, school, and community services. The mentors talk with parents, teachers, and administrators; arrange activities and outings; and locate health and social services. The mentors teach ethical behavior and life skills by setting an example and providing guidance at strategic junctures. They model wholesome behavior; expose children to new and positive experiences; and assist with college and job applications. The mentors offer support for each child in an active and preventative approach that can transform the child's life.
