A Message from the Principal
Greetings, SHHS Families:

Parent-Teacher conferences are around the corner on Monday, October 15 (12:00 - 8:00 pm) and Tuesday, October 16 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm). Have you scheduled your conferences yet? If not, please do so right away. The online scheduling system is only available through Monday, October 8. In addition, all parents are invited to join me in the Small Auditorium for cake, coffee, and conversation about SHHS, on Monday, October 15, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm.

Next week, on Wednesday, October 10, we will administer the PSAT to grades 10 & 11. This is the test that -- for 11th-graders -- qualifies students for consideration as National Merit Scholars. Students taking the PSAT should arrive to school before 8 am on Wednesday. Students in grades 9 & 12 should not report to school, as there will be no classes on Wednesday.

Wednesday evening, everyone is welcome to join us for the Fall Orchestra Concert, and again on Thursday for the Fall Choir Concert. Both events are at 7:30 pm in our Large Auditorium. We hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend!

A Message from the SHHS PTO Co-Presidents
All American Boys with authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. Wow, what an amazing event!  Lisa Vahey, SHHS PTO volunteer extraordinaire, helped build this program from the beginning, got books into hundreds of kids' hands, organized book chats along the way, created a social media forum for on-going dialogue, and brought in a huge crowd from Shaker and beyond.  THANK YOU, Lisa!

Monday evening was all about reading and learning together, sharing stories, and talking openly and honestly about race with friends, strangers, neighbors, and colleagues.  Let's keep these conversations going!  Talk with your family. Introduce yourself to someone you don't know.  Ask your kids to join a new club.  Invite new Shaker family over for dinner.  Start a new book club.  It can be that simple.

Have a wonderful weekend,
2018-19 SHHS PTO Co-Presidents

Parent Survey: Today is Final Day to Complete!
Parents, your voices matter! SHHS wants to hear your opinions! Today is the final day to complete two surveys. These anonymous surveys give important data as SHHS works through accreditation, a formal state process we go through every five years. We will use the information to reflect, set goals and improve Shaker Heights High School-so your participation matters!

The surveys were created by AdvancED, our accreditation partner. Some sections may seem complicated or less relevant to your experiences at SHHS. Please know how much we value your feedback and appreciate your insights into how we can serve all students and families well. You are welcome to complete one or both surveys

Participate in Parent Focus Groups
As part of the accreditation process, the AdvancED External Team visits SHHS on November 28 and 29. There will be parent focus groups. If you would like to be contacted to possibly take part in this visit, please click here to enter your information and we will follow-up with you in November.
Do you have an hour to support our school and our families?
PTO's annual Parent Coffee House is on October 15 & 16 during parent-teacher conferences, and we are seeking volunteers to staff the Coffee House (one hour shifts with an easy job: be a friendly face to other parents at conferences that day!), as well as volunteers to provide snacks (cookies, fruit, muffins). All you need is a positive attitude and the desire to connect with other SHHS adults. Learn details and sign-up here.
Join Us at The BottleHouse to Support SHHS After Prom
Mark your calendars for a fun evening out on Friday, November 9th from 7:30 pm to midnight at BottleHouse Brewing Company located at 2050 Lee Road, Cleveland Heights. This After Prom fundraiser is $15 per person (or whatever amount you feel comfortable contributing) and is open to the entire community.  Make a reservation by logging in to PayForIt and clicking "Fundraiser." If you're unable to join us on November 9th, please make a PayForIt donation to support After Prom.  Thank you!

After Prom is a safe, fun-filled event for all SHHS seniors and their dates, immediately following prom. Entertainment and activities will include a DJ, dancing, casino tables, photo booths, food, fantastic prizes, and much more!

Why is it important for the Shaker community to support After Prom? It keeps our youth safe and gives them an opportunity to celebrate together. We hope to see you November 9th at the BottleHouse, and bring your friends!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Conference scheduling ends this coming Monday! Please don't delay in signing up. As a reminder,  Parent Teacher conferences will be held October 15 and 16.
Entrepreneurship Discussion
Have you ever thought of being an entrepreneur?  What exactly is an entrepreneur anyway?  Shaker grads and residents have entrepreneurial experiences that range from having one employee, home-based businesses to running large and growing companies that are creating exciting jobs as well as valuable products and services for their customers.

Shaker's Innovative Center for Personalized Learning (the IC) and the SHHS PTO would like to invite all high school students to an interesting discussion about entrepreneurship.  The event will be conducted by representatives of Junior Achievement and by two guest entrepreneurs, Connie Atkins and Jack Prause.

Connie was the Founding Executive Director of the Consortium of African American Organizations (CAAO).  She also founded and led the Greater Cleveland Business Consortium of interrelated or complementary businesses.  Among other entrepreneurial activities, she is the owner of a consulting and training company as well as a principal of an IT staffing and software development company.  Jack is President and part owner of Cortina Leathers.  Jack's prior roles include Co-Founder of a startup retail concept and President of a small specialty plastics company.

Date and time:  Thursday, October 18 from 3-4 pm
Location:   Small auditorium
PSAT
Wednesday, October 10
  • On Wednesday, October 10, at 8:00 a.m., the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be given to grades 10 & 11 at SHHS.
  • There will be no classes on Wednesday, October 10.  Grades 9 & 12, and those in grade 10 who have opted out, will not have school that day.
  • Students taking the test must arrive before 8:00 am. They will find their testing rooms posted in alphabetical order in the main hall. Test takers should bring two #2 pencils and an approved calculator. Calculators will not be issued to students unless this is an accommodation they receive.
  • Per College Board rules, test takers without accommodations will not be dismissed before the end of the testing period, which is about 4 hours.
  • If students were approved by the College Board for the testing accommodation of extended time, they are required to stay in the room for the entire time (50% or 100%). This could mean 5-6 hours of testing for those with 50%, and 8-9 hours for those with 100%. Pizza and water will be delivered to these rooms only.
  • We will serve breakfast as normal but will not have regular lunch service.
  • For more information contact Ann Spurrier .  For questions about 504 Plan accommodations please contact Sara Chengelis .  For questions about IEP accommodations please contact your Case Manager.

Did You Know?
SHHS has a Test Days and Flex Nights schedule.  In an effort to limit the number of tests and other lengthy written evaluations a student has during one day, teachers are expected to adhere to the following schedule:

- A quiz that requires more than half a period to complete should be viewed as a test with respect to this policy, and should therefore be given on a testing day.
- No tests are to be given during the school week prior to semester examinations in classes scheduled for semester examinations.

Students can add their College Board Access Code and College Board ID from their PSAT 10 Score Report to their College Board account and link to Khan Academy for SAT Practice (same test as PSAT). To that end, please reflect on the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school year calendars and complete this survey at the link below. The survey should take approximately three minutes and when you're finished, you'll have the opportunity to share additional comments, ideas and feedback.

Thank You For Helping Us Celebrate Shaker!
The Shaker Schools Foundation and Alumni Association would like to thank the entire community for coming out to celebrate Shaker at the many Homecoming and Hall of Fame events last weekend!

We are especially grateful to the eight newest inductees into the Shaker Alumni Hall of Fame. On Friday, they addressed students at an assembly at the High School and then met with smaller groups of students with similar interests to share their expertise and words of advice. Read some of their inspiring remarks in the Shakerite article . The inductees were honored at a dinner at Shaker Country Club on Saturday night.

Shaker neighbors, families, alumni and community members enjoyed a Friday night event at the Dealership and a family festival and winning football game by the Shaker Raiders on Saturday. Go Raiders!
