ROSALIND FRANKLIN CHOSEN AS SHJ'S
Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958), the British chemist, whose work led the way to the discovery of the structure of DNA, is the SHJ's 2017 Humanistic Jewish Role Model of the year. We have already posted many resources on the SHJ Resources for Congregations on GroveSite. (If you do not have a sign-in and password, please contact our Information Manager,
Jennifer Grodsky.) We will happily accept additional resources to what is already posted. And please send us notifications of any programs you plan, as well as text, video, or power points of any programs you create.
You can view the two part series entitled, "The Race to the Double Helix" on the web.
In 1987 this award-winning documentary drama was originally produced for the BBC science series Horizon. It is about the race to solve one of the greatest mysteries of 20th-century science -
the structure of DNA. It is the story of the diligent research, creative analysis, and perseverance of James Watson and Francis Crick that led to the discovery. With the help of their colleague, Maurice Wilkins, they also earned the 1962 Nobel Prize.
Here are the links to
Part 1 and Part 2.
The debate on whether Maurice Wilkins leaked Franklin's vitally important research to Watson and Crick is ongoing to this day. Read about it here.

BETH CHAVERIM
HUMANISTIC JEWISH COMMUNITY
EXPLAINS HUMANISTIC JUDAISM
Beth Chaverim Humanistic Jewish Community, located
in Deerfield, Illinois, has created an innovative way to explain Humanistic Judaism and their community. They have created fifteen "question and answer" cards featuring the most basic of questions about the philosophy and their programs. The question is on one side, the answer on the other side of the card. The cards are the size of normal business cards.
Kathy Tschirhart, the SHJ's Administrative Assistant, created this
Power Point presentation to show you the kinds of questions asked and the answers to them. The Power Point does not replicate the exact appearance of the card. (See pictures on the left)

SECULAR HUMANISTIC JUDAISM ON THE WEB
The SHJ has created a best practices video series entitled, "SHJ Talks: Five Tips in
Five-ish Minutes." The first set of videos is on welcoming new people to your community before, during and after an event. Let us know if there are other topics that would interest you.
Rabbi Miriam Jerris, with the financial support of the Association of Humanistic Rabbis, has completed the first phase of its music resource project. More than 100 pieces are digitized and available. Additionally, you may contact
Rabbi Jerris if you cannot find music for the songs that you are seeking.
This is a new public group that encourages free discussion among those interested in Secular Humanistic Judaism and the Society. Please join and invite your friends!
SHJ now has a presence on Pinterest. Let us know how we can improve it.
Two years of our e-newsletters are now accessible to everyone on the SHJ Website. The link is on the front page of the Website under recent news.
Library of Secular Humanistic Judaism
