Pick it Up
A campaign to clean up New Haven was unveiled last week which includes a new slogan, "Pick It Up! Don't Trash New Haven," festooned on posters, in schools, and soon on the sides of the city's street sweepers; compliments from potential developers about how neat New Haven looks; about 426,000 pounds of garbage picked up in the 27 square blocks of downtown over the past six months; commiters of low-level crimes performing 1100 hours of community service specifically picking up trash and removing graffiti instead of going to jail.

What's Here?
New Haven's SoHo
Tom Condon writes about urban and regional issues for the CT Mirror. He recently posted a great article on New Haven's Historic 9th Square entitled " After two decades, it's New Haven's SoHo."

Thanks to imagination and patience, 94 percent of the retail space in Ninth Square is leased, according to June figures from the Town Green Special Services District, which promotes the downtown area.

Forty "Made in New Haven" labels have hit the market and many of these entrepreneurs have businesses in Downtown New Haven.

Businesses include Skappo with a wine bar at 59 Crown Street and the Merkato at 51 Orange Street; EcoWorks at 262 State Street; Devil's Gear Bike Shop, 137 Orange Street, and Make Haven, 266 State Street.
