Cytotechnology celebrates 50th anniversary
The event, held in concert with the Cytology Association of Alabama, is Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at The Club. The keynote is Marshall Austin, M.D., Ph.D. and it is a continuing education event. Click here for more details.

SHP wins 2nd Benevolent Fund Super Hero Award

The UAB Benevolent Fund awarded the School of Health Professions (SHP) the Super Hero Award for the second time in the award's five-year history. The award recognizes SHP for having 75 percent of employees donate to the fund with 65 percent of employees being continuous donors.
Respiratory Therapy students present posters at 2013 UAB Summer Research Expo

Twenty four respiratory therapy students presented their service learning posters at the 2013 UAB Summer Research Expo. The RT students attend one of two asthma camps this summer, either Camp Wheezaway or Children's Hospital Asthma Camp, as part of their capstone and service learning course.

Casazza talks kids' eating habits & school success

A recent story about children's eating habits and the relation to success in school features Krista Casazza, Ph.D., R.D., assistant professor in Nutrition Sciences. Casazza talks affect on cognitive function and what parents can do to help their children. The story appeared in UAB News, Natural Health Care, Stone Hearth Newsletters and Psych Central.
New BCBS policy to increase access to care

A recent vote by the RSA/PEEHIP Board of Control adds physician assistants to BCBS insurance policies. The move is expected to be effective Oct. 1, 2013. Stephanie McGilvray, MMSc, PA-C, in Dept. of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences says this will increase access to quality medical care for those in medically underserved areas.
Powell discusses subsidies & employer mandate with BBJ

A recent Birmingham Business Journal article asked the question "How will subsidies be covered without employer mandate?" Paige Powell, Ph.D., discusses where new revenue streams may come from and the implications associated with the change to information verification by insurance companies.

Figliuzzi named executive director of Cigna Foundation

David Figliuzzi, MSHA Class 28, is the new executive director of the Cigna Foundation. Figliuzzi, who has been with Cigna for 19 years, will be responsible for guiding the foundation in its effort to support charitable organizations or programs that work to help improve people's health, well-being and sense of security.

Graham elected to APTA position

Cecilia Graham, PT, Ph.D., in the Dept. of Physical Therapy, was elected to the APTA nominating committee. She is 1 of only 2 elected this year and 1 of only 5 serving the national organization on that committee. Her team promotes leadership development and recruits APTA leadership candidates.

McGilvray named to PAF board

Stephanie McGilvray, MMSc, PA-C, in the Surgical Physician Assistant Program has been named to the Physician Assistant Foundation (PAF) board of trustees. The PAF is the philanthropic body of the AAPA.
Kitchin on Fox 6's Good Day Alabama
Beth Kitchin, Ph.D., R.D., in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, appears regularly on Fox 6 WBRC's Good Day Alabama.
