/SAN JOSE STOREFRONT INITIATIVE

San Jose's Office of Economic Development launched the SJ Storefront Initiative offering a total of $250,000 in grants for permits, fees and taxes for small businesses to help get a jumpstart on opening a business. The program is geared toward below market leasing in previously vacant spaces to enhance the economic vitality of Downtown San Jose and Neighborhood Business Districts (NBDs). Grants will be accepted through October 2, 2013.

Joining the recent wave of more than 20 experienced restaurateurs and new retail stores opening in Downtown San Jose, Danny Qutami opened Whispers Caf� & Creperie next to the City-owned San Jose Repertory Theater in August. The opening signifies the near-100 percent activation of the Paseo de San Antonio, which attracts young talented professionals and families. Bike Share San Jose

The City's Office of Economic Development is facilitating foreign investment on development projects in San Jose through the federal EB-5 Visa Program for several San Jose based businesses, including five hotel, residential and mixed use projects.

/SKILL UP AMERICA OFFERS FREE COURSES FOR PUBLIC

The work2future program and New York Wired recently expanded the Skill UP America, a comprehensive training program to the public at no cost. The new program provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive training resources across a wide variety of subjects including computer literacy, healthcare, job skills, math and science. For 90 days, registrants take an unlimited number of courses. Users are encouraged to visit one of three work2future One-Stop programs after the 90 day period to explore additional training opportunities.
