FROM THE PRINCIPAL... Dear Friends, We hope you are well and are thawing out from what felt like a never-ending winter! The second semester of the 2014-2015 academic year at SJB is well underway and we are proud of the great work our students and dedicated faculty have accomplished during the first semester. Our Jeanites are hard at work in their classes, extracurricular activities and community service programs. Our 12th graders are excitedly preparing for the prom and graduation and the Administration is enthusiastic to welcome almost 100 ninth graders for the new 2015-2016 academic year in the fall. I hope you will enjoy the news you will read about in this issue of the e-newsletter. Thank you as always for your support and dedication to SJB! Sincerely,

CURRENT JEANITE HIGHLIGHT
Laura Willson, '15
Laura, a senior at SJB and a Manhattan resident became involved in The Girls Who Code program and it has given her a new perspective on technology and how she can incorporate it into her academic, social and future professional life. Thanks to the coding experience she gained after completing The Girls Who Code 2013 Summer Immersion Program, she created her own blog detailing her newly found coding skills and her experience. Her blog also lists the events she attends on industry-specific topics, such as hacking. Some of events she attends are called "Hackathons" which involve a large number of attendees completing computer programming exercises. She hopes that her blog will encourage other young women interested in technology to pursue their interests.
Laura also wants to make other women aware of the gender gap that exists in the technology field, specifically in the computer science area. Laura says, "The Girls Who Code Program definitely opened me up to a whole new world of technology and because of that I have been able to talk more with professionals and be featured on their websites." Laura hopes that her skills combined with exposure to decision-makers in the industry will lead to a career in technology. We invite you to read about Laura's many accomplishments on her blog: www.lauralynnwillson.com. We are also happy to share that Laura was recently filmed by documentarian, Dan Draper. His documentary, Codr.tv will focus on the history of women in computer science and other STEM sectors and examine why the tech industry continues to be male-dominated.

ALUMNA HIGHLIGHT
Shianling Wu, '75 Alumna, Shianling Wu, attended St. Jean Baptiste High School when she arrived in Manhattan from Taiwan in the fall of 1973 as an 11th grader. Coming from a large Buddhist family, the thought of attending Catholic school was far removed from Shianling's mind, but due to one of her aunts and the lone Catholic of the family, Shianling's parents made a connection with the Catholic community. Her parents felt that she and her brother would be secure attending Catholic schools in this new world in which they now found themselves. Shianling barely minded the daily two-hour round trip bus ride from the Upper West Side to St. Jean's. What did have an impact on her was how the Congregation of Notre Dame Sisters treated her. Despite language barriers and religious differences, she felt their complete and utter compassion in helping her transition into her new life in America. Shianling writes, "I will forever treasure my fond memories with Sister O'Shea who tirelessly tutored me in English, Sister Good who worked with me on Math, Sister O'Dea who was the principal then, and countless other teachers and my classmates. "As I leaf through my St. Jean's 1975 year book and diploma, I feel great nostalgia and deep appreciation for the Sisters who helped me ease into my life in America, the classmates, and the place that made me feel welcome and very much loved." Shianling also wrote that she would not be who she is today without the undivided attention she received combined with a top-rated education from St. Jean's. After graduation, she went on to earn a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from City College of New York and Columbia University. Shianling has worked for the Bell Laboratories, AT&T for years and is currently the Vice President of Engineering at a Silicon Valley firm. Shianling is married with two sons. One works in finance and the other is a high school teacher in New York City.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHT
Sarah Rowe, Art Teacher
Sarah grew up in Manchester, Connecticut in a suburban setting, but she was always drawn to the energy of big cities and a true interest in learning more about other cultures. She majored in English and minored in Art at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. Sarah's passion for the arts had not fully developed until she spent an academic year abroad at Scotland's oldest university, St. Andrews. With close proximity to Europe, Sarah visited a great number of museums, historic buildings and learned more about European cultures. She saw the work of great artists up close and personal - works she had only previously seen in books. When she returned to Holy Cross for senior year, she took a class on Buddhism and learned not only about the religion, but also about Japanese art, gardens, tea ceremonies and poetry. The blend of religious and cultural studies awoke a curiosity in Asian arts that would be a turning point for her future career.
After graduation and thanks to her experiences abroad and in her Buddhism class, she sought out new adventures and accepted her first teaching job in the small town of Obuse, Japan, teaching English to middle school children. There, she met a master potter, Keiichiroh Sato, who would become a life-long mentor, teaching Sarah all the techniques of creating pottery. She studied with him every day for two years (including weekends) from 3pm until 10pm! Her love for all things pottery led her to take courses at Central Connecticut State University after she left Japan and there she met another mentor, potter and sculptor, Vicente Garcia. Vicente would also have a profound affect on Sarah and with him, she learned how to mix mediums, such as metal and clay, and other ways of firing clay. Blending both the traditional and modern ways of working with clay,
Sarah used what she learned to teach her first art class at North Haven Elementary School. While attending an exhibit, she met former SJB Art Teacher, Doris Skelly. Doris was about to retire and Sarah, still the adventurer and lured by the bright lights of New York City, applied for Doris' soon to be vacant position and luckily for SJB, she was invited to come onboard. Sarah has been with SJB for eight years and continues to be enthusiastic about teaching our students different types of artistic processes. She looks forward to each day with the students and appreciates the diversity of our student body and of this vibrant city!
While teaching, Sarah also found time to complete a Master's in Fine Arts from Lehman College and participate in several exhibits and has showcased her work in museums and galleries such as: The Bronx Museum of the Arts,The Clay Studio, Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, Central Connecticut State University Art Gallery, Notochu San Japanese Tea House and Obuse Museum. Additionally, Sarah has several grants and residencies such as: Art & Law Program, The Laundromat Project Create Change Fellowship, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM Program. Her greatest work of art, however, is her six year-old daughter, Amelia. Sarah lives with her musician husband and Amelia in Harlem.

OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT We warmly welcomed a new Director of Institutional Advancement last fall. Laura Gutierrez Campbell brings 10 years of fundraising, relationship building and communications expertise and will be a great asset to SJB's initiatives and mission. Laura will develop and grow relationships while cultivating ongoing support from alumnae, major donors, foundations and corporations. She will also be responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership for fund development to support the school's operating budget, and will plan, maintain and supervise St. Jean's annual giving efforts.
Annual Campaign The 2014-2015 Annual Campaign is well underway and we encourage you to support the Campaign by making a gift before August 31, 2015! The Annual Campaign is comprised of two main funds: the Annual Fund and the Jeanite Fund. A gift to the Annual Fund will support day-to-day operations and will provide funds necessary to sustaining and growing academic programs. Gifts to the Jeanite Fund will enable SJB to issue more need and merit based tuition assistance. To date, approximately 70% of the student body receives some kind of tuition assistance and were it not for the generosity and dedication of donors, many of them would be unable to continue their education at SJB. To date, we have raised $305,000 for the Annual Campaign! This includes gifts to the Annual, Jeanite Funds and a couple of Bequests due to Alumnae and Friends generously remembering SJB in their wills. But it is not enough - in order to meet the 2014-2015 goal, we need your help to raise $150,000. Thank you to those donors who have already made a gift. Your support is truly appreciated and has an immediate and direct impact on our students.
