Did you know that the SJMS PTO is a great place for parents to meet other parents as well as keeping your fingers on the pulse of what's going on in your Middle Schooler's life.

The SJMS PTO needs YOUR membership!  Your membership dues help the PTO purchase snacks for the school concession stores, provide teachers with small treats throughout the school year, and help fund other school activities!

Please contact Mrs. Van Dyke for more information.

The McKinney ISD crisis response plan prohibits parent access to school buildings during a school lock-down, during lock-down drills, and when the district has placed campuses in tornado safe mode. Once the District has placed campuses in a lock-down or tornado safe mode, staff and students will be in protected areas of the building, and not near exterior doors or windows.

Parents and other visitors will not be granted access to the campus for the duration of the lock-down or tornado safe mode.

 Thank you for your cooperation.

If you would like to volunteer at SJMS, please go online and fill out the Volunteer Background form.
Click here to fill out the application
You must complete a new form each year.  Please note that if you do not complete the proper paperwork, you can not help chaperon field trips or help with the school in any way.  We need and want your help, so please fill out the form as soon as possible.

Happy Summer Tiger Parents,

What an amazing year!!! Thank you, parents, for sharing your kiddos with us. We have learned together, laughed together, and sometimes might have even cried together.  It is safe to say, your kids have touched our lives this year.  Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!

For our 9th graders (as of today): We wish you all the best as this chapter in your life comes to an end and a new chapter begins. Continue to respect others and believe in yourself...and like Dr. Seuss stated, "Oh the Places You'll Go."  Continue to live a PRIDEful life.  Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence.  That is not only an SJMS motto, but a successful way live your life.  "In the course of a lifetime, PRIDE matters."  Creech

For our new and returning Tigers: We will see you back for Meet the Teacher Night on August 22nd.  Do remember that EOC STAAR scores (Algebra and Geometry) will be posted in the Home Access Center (HAC) on June 6th.  All other STAAR scores and final report cards will be posted in HAC on June 19th. Home Access Center Link - click here

I will send you a reminder about registration this summer.  Note: all current MISD students must register on HAC each year and provide a Proof of Residency (POR) each year.  I will do several call outs and post this through our newsletter (Tiger Tales) and on social media to help you remember.  The SJMS office is open Monday - Thursday 9-3 during the summer (except during the week of July 4th).  Please don't hesitate to call or email me if you have questions or concerns.

Enjoy the summer break!  They grow up way too fast, relish these moments with them.

Dr. Curry  :)

SJMS News!!
SJMS * 2017* America's Healthiest Schools

Dear Parent/Guardian:

If your child has medication in the nurses clinic, please make arrangements to have medication picked up by 3:45 pm on June 1st, 2017.  We are unable to store any medications at the school during the summer and will dispose of ALL medication left after school dismissal at 3:45 pm.

McKinney ISD has a policy against sending any medication home with a student; therefore, you must come in personally or send another adult to pick up any medications remaining in the clinic. We will NOT send home medication with your child for any reason. If you know you will not be coming to pick up the medication left at school please email me to dispose of medication for your student.

Please remember that you will need to fill out new medication forms for the next school year. You may pick up a new medication form, along with your medication, at the end of the year. You and your physician can evaluate your child just before school begins and complete the forms before school starts in August.

Sincerely,

Naviance is an online comprehensive college and career readiness program that allows students to research careers, majors, colleges and scholarships.  Students can also complete many other activities including a self-assessment of their interests, personality, learning styles, intelligences, strengths and career clusters that will ultimately help prepare them for the college application process.

Ways Naviance is used in Middle School:
* Research colleges
* Take a learning style inventory
* Research careers - Naviance offers the Career Cluster Survey (all 8th graders have completed this)
* 8th graders will also complete their High School 4 year plan in May
* 6th and 7th graders will get lessons in goal setting and also take an interest inventory

Attention 6th Grade Parents:

Your student will need proof of the following immunizations before going into the 7th grade

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/pertussis-containing vaccine (unless a booster dose was received within the past five years),
  • Meningococcal vaccine (one dose after age 11 and every 5 years after last dose)
  • Varicella vaccine (two doses received on or after 1st birthday)
  • Hepatitis A vaccines (2 doses)
  •  MMR vaccine (two doses received on or after 1st birthday)

The vaccines listed above are required in addition to those required by earlier laws. A signed statement of varicella disease will count towards the varicella requirement.

It is necessary for your child to be in compliance before the start of school 2017/2018.
Collin County Health Care Clinic offers low-cost or free immunizations for Medicaid, CHIPs, American Indian or Alaskan native, uninsured or underinsured (no vaccine, capped coverage or select vaccine insurance coverage).

Healthy barbecue tips for summer
If you're hosting or attending a barbecue, picnic, or cookout this summer, these tips will help you.

They cover more than just sodium, because after all, eating healthfully is important for heart health.

For meat, poultry, and fish:
  • Go for grilled fish. Salmon, trout and herring are packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Rub a fillet with lemon juice and parsley or rosemary for more flavor.
  • Buy chicken breasts - and remember to remove the skin before eating - instead of the fattier dark meat (legs and thighs). Or try grilling up chicken or turkey burgers using breast meat, and add diced onions and spices for a layer of flavor.
  • Choose lean or extra lean beef for burgers, drain off excess fat after cooking, and keep the patties reasonably sized. A serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards.
  • Look for fresh and frozen poultry that hasn't been injected with a sodium solution. Check the fine print on the packaging and look for terms such as "broth," "saline" or "salt solution." Sodium levels in unseasoned fresh meats are around 100 mg or less per 4-ounce serving.

Side dishes:
  • Eat a rainbow of green, red, orange, yellow, purple and more. Serve green leafy salads or fruit salads(or a combination of both, like baby spinach with strawberries or mixed greens with orange slices). Add some crunch - and healthier fats - with toasted walnuts or almonds instead of croutons.
  • Bake the fries. Slice white or sweet potatoes into sticks, lightly spray with olive oil cooking spray, pepper and paprika and bake on a cookie sheet for 40 minutes at 375 degrees.
  • Thread some veggie kabobs - load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray and grill until slightly blackened.
  • Limit the salty sauces - if you have teriyaki, soy, and barbecue sauce in one meal, the sodium will probably add up quickly. And try some of our homemade condiments recipes.

Snacks and desserts:
  • Slice a variety of colorful veggies for a cool, crunchy snack.  Baby carrots, cucumber rounds, jicama slices, sugar snap peas, and bell pepper strips - they look great on a platter too!
  • Blend a smoothie with sweet seasonal fruit, non-fat or low-fat vanilla or lemon yogurt, ice and a touch of honey or cinnamon for a refreshing dessert alternative.
  • Grill fruits like pineapple slices, nectarines, peaches or plums - the natural sugars caramelize with the heat and give them great flavor.
  • Freeze mashed-up fruit (try peaches, grapes, or berries) into paper cups, insert a popsicle stick, freeze overnight and enjoy homemade freezer pops.

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an "out-of-hospital" setting (such as at home, at work or in a park).
It consists of two easy steps:
  1. Call 9-1-1 (or send someone to do that).
  2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
