Dear Parents and Students:
In the midst of all of the recent scandals and abuses in the Catholic Church, SJND will be sponsoring two Campus Ministry events on the same day, Tuesday, September 18, which display a much different reality of the Catholic church: a heroic priest captured by ISIS who never loses his faith and trust in God and a martyred bishop in El Salvador who fights for justice for the poor in his country knowing that his proclamation of the Gospel may lead to his death. The theologian Avery Dulles in his book
Models of the Church
lists as one of the eight models as a
prophetic model of church
. The lives of these two men represent that prophetic tradition.
Father Tom Uzhunnalil, SDB
will be on the SJND campus on Tuesday and speaking with our students in their Theology classrooms. Father Tom has written the book
By The Grace of God
which recounts his 557 days in terrorist captivity by ISIS in war-torn Yemen. Father Tom’s story shared with the students will be a story of love, forgiveness, and his remarkable trust in God who was his strength and refuge. Father Tom is one of the few clergy to ever be released by ISIS. His story does not end with his release from captivity in Yemen but his prophetic stance of forgiveness for his captors.
In the evening, SJND Campus Ministry will sponsor a viewing of the
new documentary on the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero
, the slain Archbishop of El Salvador who was shot and killed as he was saying mass. The documentary will be shown at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday night in Notre Dame Hall...
