As we enter the holiday season, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to you for being a part of the San José Unified community. I am inspired every day by how we unite to elevate opportunities and prepare today's students to be the thinkers, leaders, and creators of tomorrow.

In case you hadn't heard, Measure Y, the San José Unified parcel tax, passed by a very narrow margin. The County Registrar is conducting an automatic recount as I write this message, but we do not expect that to change the result. We will send out details about next steps once the vote is officially certified. Please call our Public Information Office at (408) 535-6444 if you would like to request a senior exemption.

I would also like to congratulate and welcome our newly-elected Board of Education Trustee Kimberly Meek and re-elected Trustees Teresa Castellanos and Pam Foley. I look forward to working with them and the entire board to keep San José Unified the most innovative school district in Silicon Valley.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again for your support.

Nancy Albarrán

P.S. Please SAVE THE DATE for our next districtwide Town Hall Meeting on Monday, February 13th at Gunderson High School.

Enrollment & Pre-Registration for 2017-18
SJUSD enrollment and pre-registration for the 2017-18 school year is coming up fast! We encourage parents and guardians to schedule an appointment in advance with our Enrollment Center.

Phase 1 of Secondary Enrollment (Grades 6-12) opens on January 23, 2017, and closes on February 8. Elementary Enrollment (Grades TK-5) opens on February 6, 2017. In order to enroll your student in an elementary magnet school, you must register no later than March 17, 2017.

Pre-registration is available for students who live within our attendance boundaries but do not currently attend a SJUSD school. Parents of currently enrolled 5th and 8th grade students will receive a notice to register their student for middle or high school in January.

If you have any questions, please visit our website or call the Enrollment Center at (408) 535-6412.
SJUSD Receives Family-Friendly Workplace Award
Last month, the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and Office of Women's Policy (OWP) honored San José Unified with their Family-Friendly Workplace Award, which recognizes employers who have implemented family-friendly policies that address the realities of working families.

The annual award is open to companies of any size that are physically located within Santa Clara County. San José Unified was one of only five companies to receive Gold status by satisfying all criteria in all categories. The honorees were celebrated at a public meeting and reception on November 14th at the Santa Clara County Government Center.

Breaking Down the Walls
From November 15-18, over 1,100 SJUSD students from Willow Glen and Pioneer High Schools participated in Breaking Down the Walls, a program designed to unify, empower, and engage every student to create a positive and supportive campus climate. WGHS hosts this program every other year to address student challenges and community building. Their motto is "It's hard to hate someone whose story you know," and students left full-day workshops feeling more invested in and connected to their school and classmates.
