Happy new year! I hope you had a restful holiday season and got to spend quality time with your family and friends. As we move into 2017, there are some big changes on the horizon for San José Unified, and we want you to be a part of them.

Over the next six months, we will be updating our strategic plan, moving our enrollment center into the District Office, planning the next phase of Measure H construction projects, and launching a new district website.

If you'd like to share your thoughts and ideas on these topics and more, I invite you to join us for our second district-wide Town Hall Meeting of the school year on Monday, February 13th, from 6-8pm in the theater at Gunderson High School.

Click here or see below for more information and to let us know if you can make it.

My best wishes for a wonderful year.

Regards,
Nancy Albarrán
Superintendent

A Holiday Surprise!
Third graders at Washington Elementary got a big surprise for the holidays when the nonprofit Bikes for Kids came to school to present them with brand new bikes and helmets. School staff learned of the generous donation months in advance but had to keep it a secret from the students - and their teachers!

Thanks to Pacific Advisors for donating the bikes, Specialized Bicycles for providing the helmets, and Mike's Bikes for adding the bells.

Measure Y passes... finally.
As you may have heard, the County Registrar recently completed all mandatory recounts from the November election, including Measure Y, the San José Unified parcel tax. The recount did not change the result, which means the measure has officially passed .

Thanks to the support of our community, we now have a reliable, local source of funds to help recruit and retain the high quality teachers and school site staff that our students deserve.

If you are a property owner 65 and older, you can request an exemption from the tax by sending us an email
with your name, mailing address, and phone number. We'll send you a form that you will need to return to us in order to qualify for the exemption.
