Top 10 Saint Lucia Experiences

Yet despite its splendor, St Lucia's remoteness makes it little-visited compared with other Caribbean islands. Which is all the more reason for you to go, right? From climbing the vertiginous volcanic Pitons to lazing on the powdery sands of Anse Chastanet beach, here's the lowdown on the island's highlights.

Like jagged sharks' teeth rising from the sea, the twin Pitons are volcanic plugs; landforms created by magma cooling atop a volcano. Though Gros Piton (2617ft) is taller than Petit Piton (2460ft), it's actually easier to climb. Real St Lucia Tours...READ MORE

A different way of solving a problem - By Carl Hunter

The traditional North American POM (Property Operations Maintenance) budget ascribes to the ratios of 9% being the fixed cost for Utilities and 40% being the fixed cost for Labour. This traditional model does not reflect the same way for the majority of the Caribbean Hotel/Resort operations. In fact for the most part the ratios are reversed I.E. 9% Labour and 40% Utilities. The Caribbean's labour rates are significantly lower whereas our energy market is considerably higher (typically between 3 to 5 times the kW/H rate for electricity)

Another traditional way we manage expenses during times of low occupancy is to rotate our line staff and give them less hours work per week. (Typically 1 day a week less) Reflecting on the fact derived from the statement above that Caribbean labour rates are significantly lower the extension of this is that the impact of losing a day's pay is greater. Typically more people are supported by the income earner in the Caribbean than in first world destinations further disadvantaging the employee. The socio economic balance is greatly affected by these cut back on hours.

An experiment:

At the Half Moon property in Jamaica we looked at the reversals above and wondered if there was an alternative for managing both issues in a way that would have dual and positive impacts.

We did the following - First we gave the basic education to all team members for energy savings within their home environment. This exercise gave the team the knowledge as to how to effectively reduce their energy bills and also created the base habits of energy management which we hoped would then transition to good habits in the work place.

Then when it came time to do the usual labour reductions/rotations instead of sending people home we made them hotel wide energy managers for the day with the requirement being that they listed all the areas where they were able to effect energy consumption by turning off lights adjusting air conditioners etc..

The net result of this is the money saved on energy made up for the wages we were protecting by employing the team members as energy managers. We DID NOT save money but we did net to zero through the exercise with the residual and permanent change of a very heightened energy awareness throughout the resort.
