Boasting dozens of employers and hundreds of attendees, Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations held its first schoolwide Career Fair on February 1, 2013 at Livingston Hall. The event brought together leading companies in a variety of industries with approximately 500 SMLR students and alumni seeking employment in human resources and/or labor relations. Charlotte Wang, a first year student in the master's program in human resource management (HRM), attended the event in pursuit of an internship. She says, "The employers were truly focused on our résumé and overall experience. I felt as if they were giving me all of their attention." Several company representatives were SMLR graduates, including Carla Jacome, a May 2011 graduate from the master's program in labor and employment relations. Jacome attended the event as an HR representative for Cintas Corporation. She says, "Graduating from Rutgers really gave me an advantage over a lot of students, and I want to give back to Rutgers what it has given to me. I want to bring my company the great talent our school has to offer." Olivia Zratko, a representative from Northwest Mutual Financial Network, was equally pleased with the turnout of SMLR students as well as their professionalism and ability. "They were very enthusiastic and eager, and it was good to see that everyone is interested and engaged in our work," says Zratko. The career fair is a reflection of SMLR's continued commitment to providing students with the resources they need as emerging professionals. The goal is to give SMLR students the opportunity to meet with leading employers in their respective areas of study who are seeking to fulfill permanent positions and internships. In addition, students are given the ideal opportunity to practice their interviewing skills and network with alumni. Tya (Rose) Marsh, a 2000 MHRM program alumna, seized the opportunity to network with employers. Marsh, who is returning to the HR field after starting a family, believes that the career fair was helpful and informative. "I was impressed to know that there were a lot of companies that have programs to help graduates and interns gain knowledgeable, on-the-job experience to prepare them for future work," she says. "There were a lot of companies who came here, so I was able to make some good connections," says Abukakar Ibrahim, a senior in the labor studies and employment relations (LSER) program. | |

The Center for Women and Work (CWW) released a new report on New Jersey's Family Leave Insurance Program At Age Three. CWW found that despite low public awareness of the program, more than 100,000 family leave insurance claims have been approved, providing working families with needed resources when taking time to bond with a new child or care for a sick family member. The study was authored by Karen White from CWW, Linda Houser from Widener University's Center for Social Work Education, and Elizabeth Nisbet from CWW.
Professor Stan Gully's paper on "Group Cohesion" was republished in Small Group Research and noted as one of the journal's four most influential and highly cited papers on group cohesion and as the third most highly cited paper at the journal. Professor Gully coauthored the paper with Dennis Devine and David Whitney. As described in the introduction to the special issue, the authors "document that cohesion is most strongly linked to performance on interdependent tasks, and that the effects of cohesion in performance are also largely shaped by variations in the level of analysis used to conceptualize and operationalize cohesion."

Professor Stan Gully, Professor Jean Phillips, Professor Bill Castellano, Ph.D. Students Kyongji Han and Andy Kim coauthored, "A mediated moderation model of recruiting socially and environmentally responsible job applicants." The paper was accepted for publication in Personnel Psychology. According to the study, recruitment messages differentially influence who is attracted to a job or organization, depending on the personal values of the potential applicant. The practical implication is that organizations should carefully attend to the messages they send throughout the recruitment process because even small changes in wording can significantly alter who ends up applying to a position, altering the fit of the applicant pool to the organization's core values.
SMLR Ph.D. Student Kaifeng Jiang's paper, "Critical link in the service profit chain: A meta-analytic investigation of the antecedents and consequences of service climate," was accepted by the Journal of Applied Psychology. The paper, is coauthored with Ying Hong from McMaster University; Jia (Jasmine) Hu from the University of Notre Dame; and Hui Liao from the University of Maryland, who graduated from SMLR in 2009.
Ying Hong from McMaster University, who graduated from SMLR in 2009; Kaifeng Jiang, SMLR Ph.D. student; and Professor Patrick McKay, chair of the Department Human Resource Management, coauthored a paper with Derek R. Avery from Temple University; David C. Wilson from University of Delaware; and Sabrina D. Volpone from Temple University. The paper, "Retaining employees through anti-sexual harassment practices: Exploring the mediating role of psychological distress and employee engagement," will be published in the Human Resource Management Journal.
