Order of Malta Motto: "Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum"
Spring Edition 2017
Ordinary Time

Blessings to you during this busy time of year for so many of us with First Communions, Confirmations, Ordinations and Graduations!  With my large family the month of May and June can be quite hectic as I zigzag from one celebration to the next for my nieces and nephews. I know many of you have expressed the same business over the past many weeks - then add in our annual pilgrimage to Lourdes the first part of May - and the month is a blur to be sure.

This newsletter is full of news about our members:
  • 3 new babies among our confreres
  • Catholic Spirit story about our 2017 Lourdes Pilgrimage
  • Deacon Jim (2017 Malade) shares his reflections from Lourdes
  • Prison Ministry in Minnesota
  • Dr Gianna Emanuela Molla visit to MN - a collaborative effort with other area Catholic organizations.
  • and much, much more...
Our annual celebration of our patron and the  Feast of St. John the Baptist will be for Minnesota Area INVESTED Knights and Dames ONLY!  This year the MN Board of Directors decided to host our Annual Meeting on this feast day. Due to the structure of the Order of Malta and paying heed to our rich military and hospitaller background, Knights and Dames typically provide leadership and are the only ones who serve in those roles in the government of the association and then in the local areas.  Thus, this meeting is not open to those in their year of discernment, spouses or Auxiliary members.   If you have questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Know of my prayers for each of you by name while in Lourdes and daily.

Note- we will not publish a newsletter during the Summer months. Please look for correspondence for next year's calendar and the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Philermo in late August.

May our patron, St John the Baptist, grant you many graces and blessings as you serve the sick and the poor in your families, parishes and communities.

Warmest Summer greetings,

Anne Marie Hansen, DM

The Pilgrimage to Lourdes: A Story by Deacon Jim Meyer
The story of my healing in Lourdes really begins about 20 years ago.  I was a member in a small men's group-an accountability group.  The group included some Catholics and some Protestants.  The Protestants in the group were always questioning Catholics' devotion to Mary.  "You Catholics worship Mary" I would often hear.  As a result, or at least in part, I was very careful not to cross the line that separates honor and devotion from worship.  I put up fences with regard to my relationship with our Blessed Mother, guards to help to not cross that line.

The many graces that are available in Lourdes are much enhanced and available due to the efforts of the Order of Malta.  They love the sick and work very hard to consider every detail that might have an effect on one or more of the Malades. Read more of Deacon Jim's story  here
Order of Malta helps sick seek healing with annual Lourdes pilgrimage: by Susan Klem published in The Catholic Spirit

Annamarie Adkins hoped that two of her children who suffer from serious illnesses would experience healing in Lourdes, the Marian apparition site in southern France renowned for healings.

But traveling to France seemed impossible for a mother who also suffers from a debilitating disease.
In May, members of the 900-year-old Order of Malta made the Lourdes trip a reality for Adkins, 40, and her children by providing for their travel expenses and complete care throughout. Click  here for the rest of the article.
Called to Be Full of Grace in Lourdes a reflection by:
Monsignor James P. Moroney, ChD
These days I am in Lourdes, praying for the sick with the Knights of Malta. I am truly grateful to be a part of this wonderful groups of thousands of pilgrims from throughout the world. Here are some reflections I offered during the morning of recollection yesterday.

There were two kinds of people in this town in 1858: the children and the skeptics.

By the children I mean not just Saint Bernadette, but all who made the trek with her out into the woods. Click  here to read more and watch a video by Msgr. Moroney
E ucharistic Ministers needed at Abbott Northwestern Hospital
Fr. Sebastian Bakatu, the chaplain at Abbot Northwestern Hospital, is in need of Eucharistic ministers to support the ministry of giving communion to our sick brothers and sisters who, without the generosity of good and faith-filled Catholics would not have access to this sacrament of our salvation daily.

Here is a brief information concerning the ministry of a Eucharistic minister at Abbott Northwestern Hospital:

The Catholic Patients' population is about 145 people every day. The number reflects only those who list their Catholic affiliation when they are admitted. Right now, the volunteer Eucharistic ministers helping Fr. Sebastian are not enough to provide Holy Communion to each patient on a daily basis. Presently, Father Sebastian is in need at least 10 more Eucharistic ministers to cover Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday (every other Sunday). Without the faith- filled and very dedicated Eucharistic ministers it is difficult to serve our Catholic Patients.

The commitment that Fr. Sebastian request is One day a week, for one (1) to two (2) hours a week. Every Eucharistic minister will have the choice of the day and the time he/she can serve as a Eucharistic minister. The Hospital provides a free ramp parking, a $9.00 voucher for either breakfast or Lunch, and a uniform to wear while serving at the Hospital.

The volunteer training required is done online. Once training is completed Abbott will send a confirmation of completion.

If you are interested, please contact Fr. Sebastian by email: [email protected] or call him at: 612-863-4880 to setup a brief orientation which will last less than one hour.

Abbott Northwestern Hospital is located on 800 E. 28th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55407.

Volunteers from the Cathedral of St. Paul parish prepare and serve meals at the Dorothy Day Center for 150-300 people. They prepare and serve lunch 8:00 AM -1:30 PM on the second Saturday of the month and on the 5th Saturday, they prepare and serve dinner 1:00 PM -6:00 PM. Prison Ministry
The efforts of Kevin & Fay Connors, AUX, continue to foster growth within the area.  This summer, they will re-brand their efforts as Twin Cities Prison Ministries as their coalition of 6 parishes grows.

To see what programs they are offering, click  TCPM Brochure . You'll see a full run down of all the activities that are available to anyone from a Pen Pals Program (SMOM Pen Pal Program) to Bible Study at the Women's Prison in Shakopee (with SMOM Bibles and Prayer Books) to 3 day retreats inside Lino Lakes, Rush City and Stillwater prison's.

Our local Delegation is helping support their efforts with programs and bibles and prayer books from the Association.  But we need your help even in something as simple as being a Pen Pal.  Thank you.

If you have more questions please email Fay Conners, AUX
Friends of Dorothy Day
Friends of Dorothy Day,

Eight winters ago, men from our Delegation began to organize volunteers and provided emergency shelter for homeless individuals during cold months because there was no more room at the Dorothy Day Center.  With the opening of Catholic Charities Higher Ground St Paul this past January, the need for overflow shelter is history.  But we as volunteers continue, every evening, to serve food and friendship to those on 2nd floor of HGSP from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.  If your schedule doesn't permit serving with us on 4th Friday's at the old Dorothy Day Center, please consider joining us any evening at HGSP.  To get more details and to sign up, click

American Association Website Redesign
The newly redesigned American Association website is up and running. You can check it out here.

A soft launch of the mobile application is targeted for July 30th. If all goes well the mobile application should be available to all of our members 3 weeks later.

The mobile application is focused on providing a much more intuitive user experience, expanded American Association and local area calendar functionality, and payment methods for association annual dues and donations.

The association is also adding functionality to the website that won't be visible to the membership but that will make the tasks and reports required of the Area Chairs much more streamlined and user friendly
