From Mr. Glasner
Hello Shaker families!
We have had a fantastic opening to the School Year.  Many of our 7th grade students and new families joined us for a great orientation day earlier this week. On Convocation Day, we welcomed our students back to our community with a school-wide assembly. Since then, many of our students have been engaged in community building and learning across all of their classes. As I walk through the building, I see students having fun, getting to know their peers and their teachers, and learning about the expectations and curricula that they will be following all year.

I would like to start by encouraging everyone to join us at our Annual Raider Rainbow Run/Walk, which is taking place on Friday, September 15, after school. Registration is open and we are looking forward to fantastic participation. In addition to being a major fundraiser for the Middle School, this event is an opportunity for us to celebrate being part of our wonderful community. Thanks in advance for your support and involvement!

All parents and guardians are invited to our annual Curriculum Night next Wednesday, August 30. Raider Time student conferences will begin next Thursday, September 1. Until then, we will only have dismissal buses at 3:00 and 5:45. The 4:00 conference bus will begin on Thursday, September 1. Additional information about the schedule for the evening is being mailed home this week. Please contact the main office with any questions. Also, this is a reminder that Picture Day is also next Wednesday, August 30.

As the school year gets underway, I would like to remind everyone about the Shaker School District Dress Code. The District Dress Code states that no clothing that exposes undergarments and/or private body parts is permitted and that no “sagging” pants will be permitted. In order to eliminate confusion and to maintain consistency, we adhere to the following guidelines when enforcing this policy: Belly buttons are considered “private body parts” so halter tops and other shirts that do not cover the torso (for boys and girls) are deemed inappropriate. Shorts, pants and skirts are acceptable provided they meet the policies stated above.
Finally, like last year, Middle School students are required to have opted-in to receive a student Gmail account.  Only students who have not done so in the past must do so this year.  Families can sign up for a student Google account via the Shaker website . Google tools for education are quickly becoming an integral part of our classrooms, so I encourage all students to have a student email account.

I look forward to seeing many of you soon!
Sincerely,

From Your PTO Co-Presidents
The PTO wishes you a great year at the middle school! We hope the first week went well for you and your children. Hope to see you at the first PTO meeting on September 5, at 7pm, where you can learn about the new PAG (Parent Advisory Group). It will be a great addition to support our school and families!

RAIN OR SHINE!

The Raider Rainbow Run is a fundraising two-mile Color Run through the Shaker Middle School neighborhood. Registered runners who raise at least $25 will be given an official 2017 Raider Rainbow Run t-shirt and will make their way on a course with 8 color stations. Students from Shaker schools and SMS teachers and staff will toss colored powders on runners as they pass. We will have festivities at the end of the race, a DJ and food trucks (including Sauced, Ben & Jerry’s, and River Dog), so everyone can hang around and celebrate.
