From Mr. Glasner
Hello Shaker families!

This is a big reminder that our annual SMS Family Thanksgiving Dinner is being held this Monday, November 13, from 5:45-8pm . There will be great food (including turkey!), entertainment, and company! A special thank you to the PTO for making this event happen. Additional information is included in the eScoop below.

In my blurb this week, I am also including a note from the Team that was formerly known as Gladiators. Thank you to our students and teachers for raising this issue and for coming up with a great solution. Welcome Team Innovators!!!

From Team Innovators (formerly Gladiators):

After our students studied the Roman Empire,
they were concerned that our Team may have been
named after a group of warrior slaves. They no longer
wanted this to represent us. In their Individuals & Societies
classes each student was given an opportunity to brainstorm
a list of possible new Team names. Once the Team teachers
narrowed down the list of potential names, students voted
on their favorite and "Innovators" was chosen as our new name.
We believe that our new Team name is much more positive
and better aligns with what we are trying to accomplish here at SMS.

Thanks,
Teachers known formerly as Gladiators

As you can see, we have a great community of thoughtful students and teachers.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

From Your PTO Co-Presidents
Please make sure you join us on  Monday, November 13, at 5:45 for the Shaker Middle School Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner in the Middle School cafeteria. This is a fantastic community building event at the Middle School that you do not want to miss! I attended this dinner for the first time last year and I was completely blown away by the number of families attending and the sense of community it instilled. My family met several new families at the Middle School and we were so happy to connect with some new faces. It is a great way to kick-off the holiday season with old friends and new!

The PTO provides the turkeys for the Thanksgiving dinner, but the rest of the items are provided by Shaker families. Please see the signup genius below to contribute to this awesome event. We are also asking for RSVPs, so please let us know if you are coming in the Sign-Up Genius below.

Thanks so much and see you all Monday night!

Design Days

Design Days were held Wednesday, October 18 and Friday, October 20. Students participated in presentations from parents, community members, and one 8th grader, Giles Foster, an entrepreneur and business owner. We were so excited to have had these career presenters show students real world application of concepts learned in the Design Class and understanding that the concepts essentially refer to problem solving and collaboration. Students in Design will rotate from one unit to another this fall. Ask your student!

Enormous thanks to the following presenters who brought their real world careers to the units being studied:

Designing a School for the Future:
Nathan Hurle- Cleveland Clinic Civil Engineer
Kevin Kennedy-Architect in Library Design
Kelly Coffman -Landscape Architect for Cleveland Metroparks
Bridge Design
Jon Hren, Eric Mack- Bridge Builders for large scale state bridge projects for MS Consultants and Cuyahoga County. They taught 5 classes!
How to Design and Market a Healthy Snack:
Julie Lehman -Nestle
Shaker Grad, Ethan Holmes- Entrepreneur and owner of Ethan Holmes Applesauce
8th Grader Giles Foster- Entrepreneur and owner of Suds Brewing Co turning beer waste into soap
Robotics and Coding:
Geoff McCormack and Pawan Divakarla-Progressive
Robotics Colleagues of Shaker Parent, Laurie Pogel-Swagelok

It was enthralling to see the range of kids engaged asking questions and participating! Thank you to all for making careers understandable and applicable to what the students learn in the classroom. Please contact Mity Fowler ( mityfowler@hotmail.com ) or Sarah Divakarla ( sarah.divakarla@gmail.com ) if you are interested in presenting. The next Design Days are in December. Click here to sign up.
Box Tops

Welcome back! SMS has been very fortunate to have amazing parents and students who are diligent about collecting Box Tops. If you have a stash of Box Tops that you have been collecting over the summer, please send them into the office. Each Box Top collected earns the school 10 cents. That adds up quickly!
Heinen's Teaming Up for Education

Don't forget: when you use your Tasteful Rewards Card throughout the school year, Heinen's will donate 1% to Shaker Middle School. Be sure to select SMS as your preferred school this year, either online at Heinens.com/schools or in-store at the Customer Service Desk.
