Hello Shaker families!
It was great to see so many of you at our Curriculum Night on Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you at our many other events this year.

Registration for our Annual Raider Rainbow Run is open!! Please join us on Friday, September 15, after school for this annual community-wide event and fundraiser. Thanks in advance for your support and involvement!

Our first Middle School pep rally and jersey day is being held next Friday, September 8, in celebration of all of our fall athletes and in conjunction with the Cleveland Browns’ opening weekend. All students are encouraged to wear (sports) team jerseys that day to represent their school and favorite sports teams. Let’s go SMS Athletics and the Cleveland Browns!!

Our first PTO meeting of the year will be held next Tuesday, September 5, at 7pm, and our first ever Parent Advisory Group (PAG) meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 13, at 7pm. The PAG is being created to engage our community members in breaking down barriers that contribute to our persistent achievement gap. We look forward to seeing you at these important meetings!

We hope everyone had a great first full week of school! PTO wants to remind you of our first meeting on Tuesday September 5 from 7:00-8:00pm in the library. Timeka Rashid and Velvet Landingham will be our guest speakers to discuss the new Parent Advisory Group (PAG) at the middle school. PAG has been very successful in implementing change at the high school level and we are excited to welcome it to the middle school! The first PAG meeting will be held on Wednesday September 13 . We hope to see you there!

Please don’t forget to sign your children up for the Rainbow Run taking place after school on Friday September 15 and continue to help your kids raise funds for the school!

Life Act Presentation

At some point during the first two weeks of October, all SMS students will attend a presentation from Life Act during their PE/Health or Design class period. Each class will attend the presentation for two days. Life Act is an organization that is 25 years old and is focused on "recognizing depression and preventing suicide." UROK, the middle school program, specifically focuses on the unique situations and changes that may induce stress for this age group. Students are taught to identify stress and recognize healthy and unhealthy responses to it. They are also taught when they should ask for help and how to request help from a trusted adult.

Guidance Department Survey

The Middle School Guidance Department will be holding several Counselor Coffee events throughout the school year for parents. They would appreciate input from Middle School parents regarding topics and event times. Please take a moment to complete this survey and share your choices.
SMS Band Boosters

Hopefully, your band student is settled into the daily SMS band classes. You will be amazed at the progress they make when they are practicing daily!

I am the SMS Band Boosters representative. The Band Boosters provide support to the directors and students from 5th grade through High School. For the Middle School, this includes funding instruments, recording and sound systems, volunteers at events, and recording some performances. We also have some extra concert attire that can be lent out. Links to important documents from the Band Boosters are listed below. Continue to look in eScoop for important band related messages and reminders as concert dates approach.

SMS Golf Club

The first meeting of the SMS Golf Club will be Tuesday, September 5, at 3pm in Room 24. Contact Mrs. Casey at casey_b@shaker.org with questions. 
Box Tops

Welcome back! SMS has been very fortunate to have amazing parents and students who are diligent about collecting Box Tops. If you have a stash of Box Tops that you have been collecting over the summer, please send them into the office. Each Box Top collected earns the school 10 cents. That adds up quickly! 
Heinen's Teaming Up for Education

Don't forget: when you use your Tasteful Rewards Card throughout the school year, Heinen's will donate 1% to Shaker Middle School. Be sure to select SMS as your preferred school this year, either online at Heinens.com/schools or i n-store at the Customer Service Desk.
