From Mr. Glasner
Hello Shaker families!
Thank you to everyone who participated in last week’s Raider Rainbow Run! We had over 650 students, community members, staff and faculty members participate in this amazing event and—as of this writing—we raised nearly $37,000, which will go directly toward supporting and enriching our students’ learning experiences. We appreciate all of you! Congratulations to 8th grade Team Explorer and to 7th grade Teams Navigator and Pioneer for having the most run participants! Congratulations to 8th grade Team Epic and 7th grade Team Legend for raising the most funds! A special thank you also to Missy Sherwin and Heather Weingart for chairing this year’s event.

Many of our clubs and activities are getting underway and we encourage all of our students to get involved! Student government held its first meeting this past week. For students who are interested in joining, please speak to Ms. Farmer or Ms. Collier. Our 2017-2018 Robotics Club is also getting started. For students interested in joining this club, please see Ms. Popple or Ms. Warren. If you have any questions about any of our many clubs and activities, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school counselor.

I am also excited to announce that this week, we kicked off the first ever staff and faculty SMS Heart Healthy Challenge! This challenge encourages staff and faculty members to engage in and to make healthy living choices and is in line with our District’s emphasis on maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Over the next two months, you may hear about teachers and other staff members doing jumping jacks with their classes, sharing healthy recipes, and joining some of our sports team practices. Thank you to our PE department, District administration, PTO, and Shaker Schools Foundation for helping make this happen and for your support!
I look forward to seeing everyone soon!
Sincerely,

From Your PTO Co-Presidents
Shaker Community—all we can say is WOW!!! So many of you contributed to making the Rainbow Run a record-breaking smashing success! There were over 650 participants in the Run—almost 200 more from the year before! The Run raised almost $37,000, far surpassing our fundraising budget of $30,000. You all were incredible in your enthusiasm and support for this event, and we could not be more thankful to the community for your support. A very special thank you goes to our Rainbow Run Co-Chairs Heather Weingart and Missy Sherwin , along with the Rainbow Run Committee members— Gerette Braunsdorf, Meredith Camp, Sarah Divakarla, Barb Horrigan, Jen Pethel, and Gretchen Witt . This Committee worked tirelessly throughout the summer to plan the Rainbow Run and to help make the Rainbow Run such an incredible success! We are so grateful to each of you.

A huge thanks also goes to the Middle School Administrators, support staff, teachers, and the custodial staff for all of your help. You were there every step of the way from pumping up the students to register, helping set up the course, throwing color on the runners, and even donating your own money to the participants! This Run could not have been such a success without each and every one of you!

Thanks and see you next week!

Google Services in the SMS Classroom

The 2017-18 school year marks the second year Shaker students have been provided access to Google services such as Google Drive, Docs, and Classroom. Over this time, students in kindergarten through 8th grade were provided a Shaker Google account after a signed permission slip was returned indicating parent/guardian consent.

As the district evolves and grows in its use of Google services in the classroom, it has become more important than ever for students to have access early in the school year. As a result, Shaker Schools will move to an "opt out" approach for parent/guardian student Google account consent. With this new approach, Shaker students will be provided a Shaker Google account, with access to grade level appropriate Google services (see table below), beginning October 2, 2017. At any time prior to or after this date, parents/guardians may opt their student(s) out of having a Google account by contacting the main office of their student’s school. If a parent/guardian opts their student out of Google services, the district will adjust account settings to prohibit access accordingly.

Please refer to the table below for a summary of Google services available to students.
Gmail Restrictions
As noted in the table above, Gmail services for grades 4-8 are available with restrictions. Students may access Gmail using their Shaker Google account and are restricted to only exchanging email with other Shaker accounts. This is a precautionary step in order to begin exposing students to the use of electronic communication while preventing anyone who is not a part of Shaker Schools from communicating with students via email.

Thank You
For parents/guardians who have already provided a signed student Google permission form, thank you. You do not need to do anything further. Your student’s Google account is available or not based on how you previously completed the form.
