From Mr. Glasner
Hello Shaker families!
Bring your Rainbow Raider spirit! I am encouraging all of our students and families to join us at next week’s Annual Rainbow Run which is taking place next Friday, September 15, after school.  Registration is open and we are looking forward to fantastic participation. In addition to being a major fundraiser for the Middle School, this event is an opportunity for us to celebrate being part of our wonderful community. Thanks in advance for your support and involvement!

All parents and guardians are invited to our first coffee with the principal next Thursday, September 14 at 9am. I look forward to seeing many of you there!
Also, all 8th grade parents are invited to attend an information session about our annual trip to Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 19 at 7pm. The trip will take place from May 2-4 and all 8th grade students are encouraged to attend. Scholarships are available to assist with the cost of the trip. Please contact Mr. Sears or a school counselor for more information.
This is a reminder that by state law, all 7th grade students are required to have proof of TDAP and meningococcal vaccines on record at the Middle School by September 13, or they will be excluded from school. If you have not yet provided this immunization information to Iris Micochero, our school nurse, please do so ASAP. You may either bring the paperwork in, fax it to our office at 216-295-4129, or email it to Ms. Michochero. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
I look forward to seeing everyone soon.
Sincerely,

From Your PTO Co-Presidents
Hi everyone! Next week is a HUGE week at Shaker Middle School! Our largest event of the year, the Rainbow Run, takes place after school on Friday the 15th ! PLEASE register your children to run if you haven’t already done! We need your help in meeting our ambitious fundraising goals so please encourage your kids to ask family, friends and neighbors for donations to the Rainbow Run. The kids receive incentives for fundraising, and all of the funds raised directly benefit your kids' Middle School experience! We need your help to make this event a success!

In addition to the Rainbow Run on the 15th, we also want to make sure you mark your calendars for all the exciting and informative events coming up next week! See the calendar above for more information.

Thanks and see you next week!

Life Act Presentation

At some point during the first two weeks of October, all SMS students will attend a presentation from Life Act during their PE/Health or Design class period. Each class will attend the presentation for two days. Life Act is an organization that is 25 years old and is focused on "recognizing depression and preventing suicide." UROK, the middle school program, specifically focuses on the unique situations and changes that may induce stress for this age group. Students are taught to identify stress and recognize healthy and unhealthy responses to it. They are also taught when they should ask for help and how to request help from a trusted adult.

If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact one of the following: Beth Casey, Health Educator; Kelly Anderson, Chamaine Abrams, or Kristina Longino, school counselors; or Emily Geier, Student Assistance Professional.

Feel free to learn more about this program at www.lifeact.org

Seeking parents to teach a Design Class at SMS!

As you may have heard on Curriculum Night, the Design Classrooms are seeking parents who apply design in their careers and are willing to share that with Shaker Middle School Students. We have had a range of parents for "Design Days" in the past from architects, financial planners (how to design your investment portfolio), engineers, physicians, graphic designers and computer scientists. Come be part of this fabulous program where the real world is applied to the design curriculum. This fall, students are studying Digitial Citizenship, Robotics, Architecture, Bridge Building and designing and marketing a Healthy Snack. The first Design Days are Oct 18-20. Please contact Mity Fowler or Sarah Divakarla if interested.
Box Tops

Welcome back! SMS has been very fortunate to have amazing parents and students who are diligent about collecting Box Tops. If you have a stash of Box Tops that you have been collecting over the summer, please send them into the office. Each Box Top collected earns the school 10 cents. That adds up quickly!
Heinen's Teaming Up for Education

Don't forget: when you use your Tasteful Rewards Card throughout the school year, Heinen's will donate 1% to Shaker Middle School. Be sure to select SMS as your preferred school this year, either online at Heinens.com/schools or in-store at the Customer Service Desk.
