President's Message for September

September 8, 2016

"O Lord, how worthless this knowledge would be, if it were not for the enlightening of my mind for thy service, or for making me more useful to my fellow men."

                                                                            St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Peace and Greetings:

Happy 50th Anniversary! Academic classes are in full swing. Fall athletic teams will begin their interscholastic competition tomorrow. Play rehearsals have begun. Once again, our halls are filled with the sights and sounds of youthful enthusiasm and excitement. It's going to be a truly great year!

Opening day enrollment is 450 students. We are pleased to "welcome home" 116 students into the Class of 2020 and seven new transfer students. Please welcome these new families into our community. As always, thank you for choosing St. Paul and the sacrifices you make in giving your child this educational opportunity.

It is imperative, if you haven't already, that your Emergency Information Card and SPCHS Information Form (Emergency Parent Reach) be returned no later than tomorrow, Friday, September 9. We will be conducting our emergency lockdown procedures and testing our parent notification soon.

Let me bring a few September parent events to your attention:

On Tuesday, September 13, we will host our annual "Back to School Night" for parents. There will be a mandated athletic meeting for parents of any SP student-athlete at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The academic session will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a brief welcome in the auditorium followed by an opportunity to tour/meet your child's teachers. This is a great opportunity to cultivate the parent/school educational partnership. A parent/guardian from each family is strongly encouraged to attend.

Our 50th Anniversary Welcome Home Weekend is scheduled for Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18. Our Welcome Home Dance for students will be Friday evening in the café from 7:00 - 10:00 pm.

Saturday festivities begin around 11:00 am with a pre-game pot luck picnic, Kids Fun Zone (i.e. bounce house, face painting, outdoor games) and live music provided by the band, Cajun Ray and the Steamers (NOTE: this is a time change instead of performing after the football game). Then, spend the afternoon cheering on our Falcon varsity football team versus Holy Cross High School, Waterbury at 1:30 pm.

Our 50th Anniversary Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus, Henry J. Mansell and several local priests on Sunday at 2:00 pm at St. Gregory the Great Church, Bristol. Archbishop Mansell was very instrumental in our recent growth and renaissance. Please make every effort to join us in this special liturgy as we remember and celebrate this milestone event in our school's history. An outdoor reception will follow.

Our first "Open House" for prospective students for the Class of 2021 will be Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 pm. You are our best ambassadors and we are truly grateful for your encouraging testimonials to prospective families and friends in your local community.

On behalf of our faculty and staff, thank you for your continued trust, confidence and partnership in sending us your sons and daughters. They are God's gifts to all of us.

In the Spirit of St. Paul,

New Year, New Birth

On Sept. 8 each year, the Church celebrates the Birth of Mary. St. Andrew of Crete, bishop (8th century), writes that the Incarnation of Christ "most certainly needed a joyful prelude to introduce the great gift of salvation to us." In the Birth of Mary, we celebrate God's preparation of her as mother of Jesus Christ, Mother of God, and mother to us all.

As we celebrate Mary's birth, we reflect on the gift of each life, especially the lives of our St. Paul students. We are grateful to our St. Paul  families for sharing their children with us.

St. Paul freshmen observed this feast day in religion class with a special visit to our new Mary Garden, an Eagle Scout project which Liam Norton ('18) completed this summer. All are welcome to visit the statue of Mary and surrounding garden at the back entrance to our school. The beauty of this space, which will only grow with time, reminds us of St. Andrew of Crete's words about Mary's birth: "Today this created world is raised to the dignity of a holy place for him who made all things. The creature is newly prepared to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator." My we each consent to God's work of preparation in us, that we may also be dwelling places for our Creator.

SCRIP Program

Thank-Scrip-Day is scheduled for September 19. Retailers give bonuses for shopping during 12:00 a.m. - 11:59 p.m. EST --- earn those bonuses!!!

Not familiar with the SCRIP program? It's an incredible way to support St. Paul Catholic High School and for you to earn discounts on your student tuition just by purchasing gift cards to pay for your everyday shopping or as gifts. This program is not required but highly recommended. Purchase gift cards for gifts or for your everyday shopping. Retailers provide a % rebates back to the school. Once you earn $250 in gift card rebates for St. Paul's, you then earn credit towards your family SCRIP rebate that can be applied to tuition. (Rebates are calculated by the discount percentage per merchant - i.e. Stop & Shop @ 4% x $100 purchased = $4.00 earned).*

Ordering is simple-you can order by  filling out an order form and dropping off in the main office (orders will be filled on Wednesday) OR you can order online recurring weekly or one-time at www.shopwithscrip.com. Enroll with  St. Paul's Enrollment Code: DCACE4AC14275.
