Recently the Shenandoah Police Department, and other agencies in the Houston metro area, have noticed an increase in the theft of tailgates off of trucks. Trends show that suspects are targeting tailgates with built-in backup camera systems, with the Ford F250 being at the top of the list. Tailgates are easily stolen items and are hard to recover due to a lack of individual markings.

There are several simple, cost effective steps that can be taken to prevent these crimes.
  • If your tailgate has a factory installed locking system, use it.
  • Aftermarket tailgate locks are available and are reasonably priced. These aftermarket locks are easily installed and vary by vehicle make and model.
  • Mark your tailgate with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). By simply engraving your tailgate with your VIN number, you increase the likelihood of getting the tailgate back in the event it is stolen. The engraving can be done with a simple mechanical engraver; touch up paint is then applied to prevent rusting. The engraving can be placed in an area where it is not commonly visible in order to keep your truck looking nice.
