AIA Michigan Newsletter/Monday Minutes

March 2016

Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.

President's Message:
Dear Members,
Can you believe it will be 60 degrees this week! For those who know me, golf is just around the corner. It has also been a busy time at AIA Michigan. We have moved into our new offices in Midtown, a successful Grass Roots conference just finished, and the 49th Annual Health Facilities Planning Seminar had a great conference last week. The 2016 Legislative day is coming up on Wednesday, March 16. Please check your calendars and see if you can free up some time to join us in Lansing next week for legislative day.

The February Board meeting was held in Ann Arbor and much of the discussions focused around our 2016 goals of increasing membership and communicating the "Value" of our organization throughout our members. In order to maintain our large State status we will need an additional 30-40 members. If we lose our large State status it will significantly affect all of our Chapters and sections. The result would be the State of Michigan's members would be service by another State and our representation would be very limited.

A few interesting "Value" facts that have been accomplished since January;

*             A number of AIA Board members attended the Michigan Board of Architects Board meeting last month for the purpose of supporting the Local Universities in explaining the newly proposed educational curriculum plans to reduce the Schooling and job training for our young professionals. The members also supported and discussed the initiative to reduce the number of IDP hours required to obtain licensure.

*             The AIA Michigan Board just recently signed letters in opposition of the House Bill 5232 and Senate Bill 720 which would have changed the requirements/regulations on Historic Districts throughout the State. These Bills could threaten many historic buildings/sites and Districts.

*             The Chapters and sections are scheduling CEU seminars across the State to assist members in obtaining the necessary learning units to meet the State Licensing regulations.

Thanks and please know that I take great pride in being an AIA member.

Thanks for reading/listening!
