Social Network Analysis in the Los Angeles, CA SPI
|
The Los Angeles, CA Smart Policing Initiative is focused on reducing violent crime and gun-related crime. Since 2014, gang violence has re-emerged in the four Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) divisions and targeted neighborhoods (LASER zones). The LAPD is exploring the use of social network analysis (SNA) as a tool for identifying links and associations between and among gangs. Based on the work that has been done by the Kansas City, MO SPI, Dr. Andrew Fox and Major Joe McHale provided training LAPD on July 12, 2016. The goal of the training was to determine whether SNA is a viable tool for LAPD and how it can be used in the LASER zones. The one-day training for executive command staff and crime/intelligence analysts was very well received, and LAPD is now working to expand their use of SNA.

Webinar: Building Body-Worn Camera Program Policies
|
|
The BJA Body Worn Camera Training and Technical Assistance program will host a webinar on August 25, 2016 at 2pm EST.
We are learning that the implementation of body worn camera (BWC) technology involves more than the introduction of new technology into law enforcement. Full implementation of BWCs in a police agency affects key areas of operations and administration, as well as internal and external stakeholders, in significant ways. For many departments, the implementation of BWCs is in direct response to community and stakeholder concerns about police use of force and the desire for transparency in how these incidents are investigated, reviewed, and managed.
This webinar will provide the spectrum of policy decisions current agencies are using to operate their body-worn camera program. This will include recommendations on how to meet the BJA requirements, why they are so important, how BWC Pilot Implementation Program (PIP) agencies are faring in the policy review, how to avoid setbacks, and model policy components. You can register online here.

Introducing the New BJA NTTAC Violent Crime TTA Resources Web Page
|
|
As part of its continuing effort to provide training and technical assistance (TTA) services to achieve safer communities nationwide, BJA National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) is heavily focused on supporting promising and innovative efforts to support communities in addressing violent crime. In support of this focus, BJA NTTAC has launched a new violent crime TTA resources page on its
web site. This new
violent crime TTA resources page features a list of publications, national initiatives, trainings, technical assistance opportunities, and other materials that BJA has identified that may be beneficial to support your community in your work to reduce violent crime. This list is not all-encompassing, but rather features those resources that BJA NTTAC believes will help maximize positive outcomes within your community.
The BJA NTTAC violent crime TTA resource page can be accessed directly
here and is located under the
Tools and Resources tab on the BJA NTTAC home page.
