Letter from the Editor

 


I. AM. A. RUNNER.  I know I don't look like a runner. I'm not skinny with a body mass index of 0. I'm short, stocky, and some people think, too old to be a runner. I volunteered at a water stop for the St. Anthony's Triathlon last week. I saw really fit, buffed bodies running by our table. I also saw some not so fit, flabby bodies running by our table. Everyone trained, everyone became anxious, and everyone ran. They were all runners. I lace up my running shoes, get out the door and start running much like Shalane Flanagan or Deena Kastor, or those elite triathletes, just not as fast. Regardless of what I look like, how old I am, or how slow I am - I am a runner.

I know I'm not fast like Shalane or Deena. I never could run faster than a 7:05 mile, and that was just for one mile. I never could run faster than a 3:34 marathon. But I lined up on the starting line just like those who could run faster. I'm much slower these days, however, I still train long and hard like the speedy ones. I still run track sessions. I still run bridges. I still run in all kinds of weather. I may not be fast like the elite runners, but I am a runner.

 

 

I know I'm not young any more. But after almost 25 years, I can still run races. I can enjoy each and every run now with greater appreciation for the gift I've been given. I still have the passion, intensity, competitiveness I used to have. I still have fun. I still participate, because, I am still a runner.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

 

 

I

I'm frequently fascinated by the reactions and facial expressions of fellow Floridians at the mere mention of hills.  Whether it's a training run, a bike ride, or a race - or even just a conversation about a hilly course - they get totally freaked out.  "Yikes"!  In fact, I've seen runners get so psyched out about a pending hill climb that they were defeated before they even got there.  Yes, climbing a hill is challenging.  It will probably slow you down, most like increase your seat rate and definitely jack up your heart rate.  But isn't that part of why we train?  To take on challenges and to be better.

 

To me, hills are simply part of what we deal with as runners and cyclists.  I spent the majority of my training years in the Watchung Mountains of New Jersey.  Whenever we went for a ride or a run, we were almost always going uphill or downhill.  In the beginning, hills were very daunting to me.  After a while they became part of the terrain.  You gear down on the bike, jump up on the balls of your feet and lean into the hill on the run, and you just keep going.

 

Training on hills makes you stronger, both when you climb and also when you run or ride the flats.  If you schedule hill repeats once a week in your training, you'll realize pretty quickly that you are not worrying so much about the antigravity monsters.  You'll run and ride right through them.  Training on hills renders them conquerable.  And you'll soon find yourself passing fellow flatlanders who don't train on hills.

 

And here's some more good news.  St. Pete Road Runners has at least one hill workout a week.  The hills are usually our local bridges - the Bayway Bridge and the Misener Bridge, to name two.  Different weeks.  Different venues.  Check out www.sprr.org for more details including the SPRR contact erson.  Join these group training runs and defeat your fear of hills.

rrcaThe St. Pete Road Runners is a member of the Road Runners Club of America.  Club membership is open to all walkers, joggers, non-competitive runners, biathletes, triathletes and competitive runners.  Your membership gives you monthly meetings with guest speakers, coaching, group runs, newsletters, Grand Prix Series, and the absolutely best social events.
 
Your Board has been working hard with strategic planning in order to improve benefits for our members and to continue to make SPRR one of the best running clubs in the area.  We invite you to be part of the fun and excitement SPRR has to offer.

DON'T FORGET your membership dues becomes payable on June 1.  You can renew your membership online using PayPal!   I hope you will take advantage of this easy way to join SPRR or to renew your membership.

Our next meeting is a run/social meeting.  We will meet at Fit2Run,  256 2nd Street No, St. Petersburg, at 6:00pm.  Run distances and times will vary according to what you want to do that night.  Just be sure to come back to Fit2Run by 7:00pm to join us with our social after your run.

SPRR NIGHT AT THE BALLGAME

 

 

 


Our annual SPRR club night at the Rays ballgame is coming up.  Plan to join us for a fun night at the Trop when the Rays play the White Sox.  Game time is at 1:10pm, Sunday, June 14.  Tickets are $15 per person.  Karen Mathews will have tickets available at our meeting May 14 or at track Tuesday nights.  You'll need to get your tickets as soon as you can, however, as these sell out fast.  For further information, contact Karen Mathews at mathray12@gmail.com.
