Dear  ,
Letter from the Editor
new-year-header3.jpg H

In the poem, The Rainy Day, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, there's a familiar phrase, "Into each life some rain must fall." Everyone has their rainy days.
As a child at Christmas you may not have received the pony you wanted.  I remember wanting a Tonka truck, or trains, or a chemistry set like my brother got.  Those were much more exciting gifts than the doll I received.  I was disappointed with the doll, but I was happy to receive a sled, or ice skates, or a pair of good winter gloves that could pack a mean snowball.
In running, you may not have gotten that PR you were trying so hard to get.  You may not have finished that marathon you trained so long and hard for.  Life sometimes gets in the way of how you want to run.  That can be frustrating and very disappointing.  But somehow, you finds ways to overcome your frustrations and disappoints.  You find you are happy to be able to run, and then you move on to the next goal.
This new year we anticipate successes, triumphs, and conquering challenges.  This new year will also bring those disappointments, frustrations, and challenges we can't seem to conquer.  But, remember, we are runners.  Runners are resilient, determined people.  We don't give up.  We always have hope.  We weather the storms we have to travel through.  And, like in Longfellow's The Rainy Day, we know that beyond the rain the sun still shines.  Happy New Year.
Enjoy your journey,

Happy New Year

If you made a New Years resolution for 2016, and if you're a runner or triathlete, my guess is that your resolution includes something about getting healthier and more fit, or racing at a new distance or setting a PR.

Whatever your plans are for 2016, make the commitment. Know what you need to do; what you want to do. Set up a plan and do it.

St. Pete Road Runners is also looking ahead to 2016 as a special year. It's a celebration of our tenth anniversary as a club. The 2016 calendar is taking shape with running meetings, social events and more. Our first meeting of the year will be on Thursday January 14th at Empath Health. Come on down and meet your new Board of Directors and hear about some of the plans that are taking shape.

Are you looking to start the year off with an early season race? There are quite a few in January and February, including the St. Pete Beach Classic and Clearwater on January 16-17th , the Chilly Willy Duathlon on February 7th, and Gasparilla on February 20-21st, just to name a few.

If you need motivation to stay on track, join in one or more of our group runs and workouts. Knowing there are people waiting to meet you at a particular time and place makes it easier and more fun to get out bed and train. For me, sometimes the toughest distance is the 15 feet from the couch to the front door. But once I'm out there, I'm so happy.

So tie up the laces on your running shoes and come on out to train, compete and volunteer at races. We look forward to seeing you out on the roads.

Train smart. Race fast.

A silver-haired lady calls her neighbor over and explain, "I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to even get it started.  It's supposed to be a rooster when it's done."  The neighbor looks at the puzzle spread all over the table then at the box, and shakes his head.  "It's never going to look like a rooster.  Let's relax, have a nice cup of tea, and then put all the cornflakes back in the box."

Enjoy your Journey,
