Dear  ,
Letter from the Editor

Running has taken me to some incredible places.  I have white-flower-assortment.jpggone to many destination races and stayed a few extra days to play tourist.

San Antonio, Texas was one of those races.  The race atmosphere, course, friendly volunteers with those lovely Texas accents, and a big medal replica of the state were all wrapped up into great memories.  We stayed a few days extra and rode the River Walk.  We ate at a real Texas steakhouse.  The best part was our tour of the missions, including The Alamo.  I was surprised by how small The Alamo was, but stood in awe at the chance to visit a place with such history.

Boston will always be one of my favorite destination races.  Running on the same trail as Paul Revere's Ride, seeing the historic statues, the swan boats, and visiting Boston Harbor where they held the tea party, gave me more wonderful memories .
Big Sur is another favorite destination race.  Running the first part of the race on rolling hills, past the 1889 Point Sur Lighthouse, crossing the Little Sur River, seeing the incredible challenge ahead, and conquering that challenge, a 560 foot climb to Hurricane Point.  The half way mark is the Bixby Bridge where, in my day, Jonathon Lee, wearing a tux, was playing symphony music on his Yamaha Grand Piano.  Another set of pictures to store in my memory banks.
I've been to other incredible places as a runner.  I've seen the runner's high, a euphoric place that left me with awesome feel good memories.  I've been to the place of accomplishment after finishing a race I never thought I could do. I love the happy place I go to with my everyday running.
Truth is, you can go to big races like New York City, Boston, or Chicago, but your incredible journey is really wherever you are running today.  Enjoy it.
Enjoy your journey,

We want results.

It's the middle of summer and it seems like the race calendar is as full now as I is in the cooler months of March or November.  You can race virtually every weekend in the greater Tampa Bay area.  And often there are more than one race to choose on any given Saturday or Sunday.

And if that's not enough, race organizers have started sending out announcements and teasers for their autumn and winter races.  Everything from 5K's to marathons.  There are Halloween races in Fort Desoto at the end of October, Christmas events in December, St Pete Beach and Clearwater races in January,  Gasparilla and even a chilly duathlon in February.  So if you're not the type of person who likes to race in these dog days of summer, you can start to whet your appetite for the fall and winter races.

To help you get in shape for any of these races, SPRR offers group training runs held each day of the week.  Go to www.sprr.org for details.

And don't forget about our own SPRR Beach Series.  We offer three 5K races in Pass-A-Grille in June, July and August.  Races start and end on the beach in front of the Hurricane Restaurant, our host sponsor.  It's not to late to sign up for the third and final race on August 21st.  You can sign up in advance at www.active.com.  You also an register at the race site starting at 5pm on race day.  And remember that SPRR members get a discounted registration fee.  The 5K race starts at 7pm.  Yeah.  It's hot.  But you'll be running at the water's edge.  And there are showers at the finish line or just jump in the Gulf to cool off.  Plus there will be fun, food and beverages after the race.  It's a block party!  So lace up your running shoes and come on out and join us.

And don't forget to send us your results for all the races you do.  Send them to Ginger at gingerherring16@gmail.com and she will post them in the next month's SPRR Newsletter.

Train smart.  Race Fast.

Christine "Rocket" Arbasak ran the July 4th Peachtree 10K in Atlanta.  You only get the shirt if you're a finisher.  Congratulations Rocket.  She said it was very bad, rainy weather but that didn't stop 55,000 runners.
