Dear  ,
Letter from the Editor

autumn-path-sm.jpgYay!  It's September.  I know the temperatures won't reflect it, but September is when Autumn begins.  Football starts, school starts, new television shows start.  We'll even start thinking of really running again.  There will be a few teaser days when it gets cooler (none of which will fall on your long run day).  But it'll be good enough to give us hope for a good run.
September is also the time we start training for our big fall race, like the SPRR destination race at Space Coast.  You may have been taking it easy through the oppressive summer days.  Or, you may be ready to start training again after an injury.   Even if you've been running all summer, it's now time to crank it up a notch.  If you're like me, that sounds a lot like Mission Impossible.
I'm sitting in my comfy chair, in my cool air conditioned living room, in my cozy little home, and you want me to go OUT in the HEAT and RUN??!!??  "Yes," says the voice on the MI tape recorder.  "There is trouble with obesity out there and we need your team to set the example and wipe out the problem."
"It's not going to be easy, especially in the beginning.  But with your perseverance, determination, and willingness to be your best, you will succeed.  Your mission, should you chose to accept, is to start now.  This message will self destruct once you get out the door."
Enjoy your journey,

Happy Birthday, Ben

My message today will be short and sweet.  Please join me in wishing Ben Fudge a Happy 80th Birthday.  I'm sure most, if not all of you, know Ben.  He has been a fixture in St. Pete Road Runners since the club's beginning ten years ago.  Ben continues to coordinate group training runs on the beach, speed workouts, and a lot more.  He is a true club ambassador.  If he's not giving running advice, he's making us smile with his wit and wisdom.  And he's still the picture of health, running most days.  Ben is the poster child for good health through running and fitness.

When you see Ben at a training run or at this month's general club meeting on September 10th, remember to give him a fist bump and wish him a happy birthday.

Our September meeting will be held at the Suncoast Hospice/Empath Health, Thursday, September 10, 6:30pm.  Our guest speakers will be Tracy and Sean Connolly.  Tracy and Sean are long time SPRR members and are very good runners.  They burned up the roads with their talents in road races.  Then, they decided to do a cross country trip, saw Badwater Ultra and decided they would like to do trails and ultras.  This all lead them to Comrades in South Africa.  They will share their experience at Comrades.  This is something I'm very interested in hearing.  I think you'll like it too.  Who knows, maybe you'll end up having a passion for trail running and ultras.  See you there.

Carol Jean and Kip Vosburgh have been enjoying a great trip out west.  Carol Jean writes:

Just had to share this picture with you.  While on my morning run, in a town right outside the Rocky Mountain National Park, I discovered I had company.  First, I saw one magnificent elk very close to me.  Then 7 more.  How thrilling.

We are heading back to NC after a months trip touring national parks.  How beautiful the west is.
