SR Health and Safety
Pre-service Training Requirements
Dear Providers:

The Early Learning Coalition has been made aware that the Office of Early Learning (OEL) released information about pre-service training requirements as part of the new SR Health and Safety standards.  We are sending you this Enews as further clarification to OEL's email and as follow up to our November 7, 2015 Enews that outlined the new SR pre-service training requirements impacting providers in Pinellas County.

It's important to note that most personnel already meet the pre-service training requirements due to the fact that courses under Option 1 meet licensing training requirements.  Please read the following information carefully to be sure you are in compliance:
  • ALL current providers and personnel, including school age only and licensed exempt providers--hired on or before January 1, 2017--must complete ONE of the pre-service training options by March 31, 2017 OR within 90 days of employment if they were hired less than 90 days prior to Mar. 31, 2017 (Example: if you hired staff on January 10, 2017 they are required to complete pre-service training by April 9, 2017)
  • As of April 1, 2017, anyone who has NOT completed his or her pre-service training requirements within 90 days are NOT allowed to be with children unsupervised.

Please note: All personnel must still complete pre-service training within the prescribed 90-day timeframe from the date of employment. After this 90-day window, staff would be ineligible to be in the classroom until they have completed training, regardless of whether or not they are supervised.

Pre-service Training Requirements Options (choose only ONE):
  • Option 1 (DCF Courses-Mandatory for Child Care Licensing):
-    Health, Safety and Nutrition
-    Child Growth and Development
-     Behavioral Observation and Screening
-    Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

  • Option 2 (Early Learning Florida Health and Safety Modules):
-   Health and Sanitation
-       Safety of the Environment
-       Precautions in Transporting Children (if applicable)
-       Safe Sleep Practices (not required for school-age only programs)
-       Child Safety and Prevention
-       Planning for Emergencies
-       Prevention of Child Abuse and Supporting Children in Trauma
-       One of the Supporting Social-Emotional Development Modules (Infant/Toddler, Preschool, Mixed-Age group)

We will cover this information in more detail at the upcoming Provider Outreach Meetings, and we highly encourage you to register for one of the three meeting opportunities.
