Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. We hope you enjoy the new format for our weekly updates.

Here are your important announcements for the week from Sanborn Regional High School:

SRHS Wins 2012 Blue Ribbon Award
Given by the New Hampshire Partners in Education Organization

blue ribbonSanborn Regional High School has been selected by the New Hampshire Partners in Education as one of only twelve high schools in New Hampshire to receive the 2012 Blue Ribbon Award at its upcoming 31st Annual Celebration of Volunteers. The Blue Ribbon Award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of school volunteers and their achievements during the school year.

The SRHS PTO applied for this award on behalf of all of the individual parent volunteers and the parent organizations in our Sanborn community that positively impact our school culture and climate. There is an ancient African proverb that says "It takes a whole village to raise a child," and the Blue Ribbon Award is recognition that our school community is committed to that vision. On behalf of all of our children, thank you to all of our volunteers for their efforts.

Please consider volunteering at our school this year. Here are some ways you can do that:

You can join one of our many parent organizations such as:

- SRHS PTO
- Athletic Boosters
- Music Boosters
- Drama Boosters
- Touchdown Club
- Kick Club
- Friends of Ice Hockey

You can volunteer to help your child's class in fundraisers, Homecoming or Winter Carnival preparations, or other class initiatives

You can volunteer to help during the school day in places like our library, main office, or guidance office.

You can volunteer to host students for a job shadow or internship experience at your business.

For more information on any of these opportunities or other volunteer ideas you may have, please email Brian Stack by clicking here.

Join the New Science Club
A message from Ken Jacobs, the club's faculty advisor

 Science Club

A couple of weeks ago the science club at SRHS held their first meeting and they have already made a big impact. They assisted Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Connors in installing a state of the art weather station which will be used to collect data for a variety of classes and projects. The weather station monitors an array of sensors that measure the surface temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and more. This project was just a start as the science club plans for more activity this year in the areas of research, outreach, community service, and of course fun. The club is currently meeting on Tuesdays in room 224 and all are welcome.

NECAP Continues This Week for Grade 11
All Grade 11 students will take the last 3 NECAP tests this week

Each year, Sanborn Regional High School 11th graders join with all 11th graders from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island, to participate in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).  NECAP consists of a series of tests which measure a student's proficiency in writing, reading, mathematics, and science.  The writing, reading, and mathematics tests are administered in the fall and the science test is administered in the spring.

The 6 NECAP tests (2 writing, 2 reading, and 2 math) will be given to all grade 11 students on October 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 during their block 6 class. All other students will attend their classes with a normal bell schedule.

The school has developed a testing protocol and schedule to place your student in the best possible position to succeed on the NECAP tests.  Parents, we also need your help.  How?  Simply stated, you can assist us in placing your student in the best possible position to succeed on the NECAP tests with some simple steps:

1.   Motivate your student to put forth his or her best effort on the tests.  Speak of the tests as an opportunity for students and for the school to gain insight into teaching and learning.

2.   Make certain that your student is well-rested before each test administration, with a minimum of 8-10 hours of sleep.

3.   Make certain that your student has eaten a nutritious breakfast before going to school on testing days.  If morning time constraints hinder eating breakfast at home, the school cafeteria has breakfast items for sale beginning at 7:00 AM.

4.    Demonstrate interest in the NECAP test by visiting the New Hampshire Department of Education website by clicking here. This link will provide a wealth of information for you and for your student.

5.   Encourage your student to fully answer each test question, including all constructed response questions which ask a student to explain how s/he arrived at an answer.

6.   Please support your student's timely arrival at school each day.  School attendance is very important on testing days.  Any tests missed due to absence must be completed during a makeup session.

For more information on the NECAP, please view the parent letter that was sent home this past week by clicking here.

People are encouraged to purchase their own boxes or buy boxes to share with others. The capsule will be opened in 2026 -- just in time for the ten year reunion for the freshmen Class of 2016. Rethinking Class Rank
Brian Stack shares his thoughts on the future of "class rank" in America

Note: Mr. Stack writes occasionally for a national blog on competency-based grading and reporting. Recently his post on "rethinking class rank" was the featured article for the site. You can visit that blog by clicking here. The article is included below.

If you are interested in learning more about how SRHS calculates class rank (which we still do), please click here to view an informational handout.

My school, Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston, NH, made the shift to a competency-based grading and reporting system about three years ago. For those of you who have recently made the switch, as well as those of you who are planning one in the near future, I can tell you that once you go down the "competency road" it creates a chain reaction of other proposed changes - some you would anticipate, some you would not.

For us, we weren't too far down the path before the question came up of what we should do about class rank. Like most traditional high schools, we have always used a weighted grade point average (G.P.A.) to compute our class rank. We also have always engaged in traditions such as holding a banquet for students who were ranked in the top ten percent of the graduating class and naming a Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and a Class Essayist to the students who were ranked 1, 2, and 3 respectively in their graduating class. With the shift to a competency-based system, we hoped to remove the tradition of class rank. We found that this would prove harder to do than we originally thought.

The philosophy behind ranking students based on an index such as a GPA is flawed with a competency-based model. Imagine telling this to your incoming freshman class on the first day of school: "Dear students, we have a special tradition of holding a banquet to celebrate those of you who will graduate in the top ten percent of your class. No matter how hard each of you work to master both the school-wide and course-based competencies at our school, ninety percent of you will never have the option to attend this banquet." This makes no sense, and it is even a little depressing. Furthermore, it just isn't fair. Why not instead set a bar that you will use to distinguish an "honor graduate", and any student who is able to reach (or exceed) that bar gets the distinction at graduation. From year to year, the number of honor graduates will change, but the standard never would. Every student would have the opportunity to be considered an honor graduate, provided they meet the requirements.

Last Spring, our school had the opportunity to make a joint presentation with Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH about competency-based grading to representatives from the admissions offices of every single private and public college and university in New Hampshire (only Dartmouth couldn't make it that day). We hoped to walk away from this meeting with a blessing from the colleges to move away from the class ranking systems that we were currently using, but that was not the case. Although the admissions officers understood and appreciated our position about rank, they explained that it was still a necessary component of their admissions process. Without giving away all of their secrets, they told us that they keep data on how our kids who have enrolled at their school have done over the last ten years, and that information is used when determining which applicants to select from our school. Class rank is a common denominator that helps them compare our students against each other, not necessarily against other schools.

So, despite our best efforts, we continue to operate with a traditional class ranking system at Sanborn, although we do try to impress upon students and parents that class rank is only one piece to a portfolio of information that gets considered by colleges. Perhaps it will take this movement getting a little bit larger before higher education institutions will join us in recognizing that ranking students has no place in a competency-based system.
