Have a "SACC"essful New Year!

If your New Year’s resolutions include improving the quality of your School Age program, you may be ready for SACC Technical Assistance. School-age children have unique needs, and providing environments that support their positive development is important as they transition from childhood to adolescence. Your SACC Specialist can provide support to help you develop solutions for challenges unique to School Age care. Your SACC TA can provide assistance with:

  • Professional development in developmentally appropriate practices for staff that are new or transitioning to SACC,
  • Aligning with your program’s vision and policies with your children’s academic, physical, emotional and creative needs,
  • Helping staff implement effective behavior guidance and positive social interactions among children,
  • Implementing engaging activities for mixed age groups, including STEM learning,
  • Supporting supervision and planning for smooth transitions,
  • Effective room arrangement for temporary, mobile or permanent spaces,
  • Planning for full day or summer School Age care.

These are just some of the ways your School Age Specialist can support your program. All Technical Assistance is available to School Age programs at no cost. If you are interested in receiving SACC TA, contact your STARS quality coach or complete a TA request form .
Self-Assessment Checklist  to Support Certification Compliance

OCDEL has released new user-friendly tools, designed to assist Child Care Center, Family and Group Child Care Home Providers in performing periodic reviews of their facility operations to achieve compliance with OCDEL certification regulations. When used regularly, these checklists can help to identify program strengths and gaps in the understanding of and compliance with OCDEL regulations.

Language Castle

If you have children of any age in your program that are bi-lingual or multi-lingual, check out the Language Castle website from Karen Nemeth.

The vast majority of Early Childhood Programs have at least one child who may be from a family that does not use English as their first language. As teachers and directors, we can make sure that we are prepared and educated about what we can do to provide success for both the child and the family.

Language Castle is a website that provides information and has a link that you can use to subscribe to their newsletter. Take a moment to check it out.
Do you have a PA One Book Story?

The PA Promise for Children website is running an OCDEL campaign where they will be highlighting a different OCDEL program each week and PA One Book is one of the programs.
They are looking for stories/testimonials from you, providers, and families regarding the impact or importance of the PA One Book program. Please also pass this information along to any providers or families that you work with.
All stories would be published to the PA Promise for Children website and used in social media. If you could submit at least one photo with your story it would be greatly appreciated.
All stories can be sent directly to Mary Hall at marhal@pakeys.org.
Step Stool Recall
"Christmas Tree" Syndrome

If you notice that you or someone in your family has started coughing and sneezing since you put up your Christmas tree, the cause could be Christmas tree syndrome, an allergic reaction to mold spores that hang around on live trees. It causes an upper respiratory reaction and can become quite severe .
