SisterSong to Host Benefit Show and Artist Convening in Charlotte, NC
(Charlotte, NC) - Statement by Ashley Williams of Charlotte Uprising and SisterSong:

"SisterSong's mission is to strengthen and amplify the collective voices of Indigenous women and women of color to achieve reproductive justice by eradicating reproductive oppression and securing human rights. One of the ways that we do this is through harnessing art to tell stories, shift conversations and create culture change.

This Friday, October 28th, SisterSong will host a benefit showcase of local and national artists in Charlotte, NC at Goodyear Arts, a community art space housed in center city.  Goodyear Arts has served Charlotte as a transient, ever-changing space for artists and community members to show and experience art.

The show will include local and national performance artists, visual artists, musicians, mixed media artists, and poets. SisterSong is committed to raising awareness of injustices through the practice and experience of art.  It will benefit Charlotte Uprising and SpiritHouse of Durham, NC, local organizations that strive to inform, strengthen, and organize the communities that they are housed in.

Following the benefit, SisterSong will host a day long Artists United for Reproductive Justice convening on Saturday, October 29th for artists and activists to learn more about how they can incorporate Reproductive Justice into their work, discuss what it means to be an activist and artist, and to ultimately have a dialogue about being an artist who makes socially conscious work in a time of anti-Black racism, where communities and bodies are under attack. The convening will take place at the Levine Museum of the New South.

It is our goal that each artist will leave the convening with a better understanding of Reproductive Justice and new strategies for being an artist and activist."
