When the Circus Descends
New York Times

We are pretty familiar with this story: A perfectly sensible if slightly boring idea is walking down the street. Suddenly, the ideological circus descends, burying the sensible idea in hysterical claims and fevered accusations. The idea's political backers beat a craven retreat. The idea dies. This is what seems to be happening to the Common Core education standards, which are being attacked on the right because they are common and on the left because they are core.

The Common Core - Why Isn't Public Support More Robust?
Public Agenda

The development and implementation of the new, voluntary Common Core learning standards in literacy and math got off to an impressive start. Set in motion in 2009, the standards were quickly adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia. Now, however, the Common Core is meeting forceful resistance from both the right and the left.

Lego, National Instruments Promote 'Hands-On' STEM Education
US News & World Report

The company that brought millions of Technicolor bricks to children's playrooms around the world now has its eyes on overhauling STEM education. Lego, the toy-block behemoth, has worked with National Instruments for nearly 20 years to bring more hands-on learning to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. By using National Instruments software that's based on the same LabVIEW program used by engineers across the country and harnessing it to program Lego robots, students can hone their reasoning skills through creative problem-solving, rather than relying on rote memorization, dry textbooks and staid lectures.

The Maker Movement: A Learning Revolution
ISTE
The impulse to create is one of the most basic human drives. As far back as the Stone Age, we were using materials in our environment to fashion tools for solving the problems we encountered. And in the millions of years since then, we have never stopped creating. In fact, the rise of civilization is largely defined by the progress of technology of one kind or another.
Does Higher Education Actually Prepare You for Your Career? Depends
Forbes

Have we as a society become so perverse that we are now begging colleges and universities to "relieve us" of $150k to 200k for a basic bachelor's degree? Is it a good idea even when we know that most degrees do not guarantee that we'll find a job that could pay back that kind of money? At the risk of causing trouble, I wonder if in the rush to get every kid into college, did we over do it?

Fighting for Science in the Classroom and America's Future
Huffington Post
The next generation of inventors, policymakers, and CEOs will determine the fate of the environment and our economy. In order to ensure that these future leaders are up to the challenge, a commitment to comprehensive climate science education is needed today. Investing in science has helped us achieve the seemingly impossible before -- from the moon landing, to the Internet, to incredible advances in medicine. It is time that we make that investment once again by quickly implementing the Next Generation Science Standards in all fifty states. Educating our young people about climate science and solutions will help America to lead this global effort.

We appreciate your continued support and involvement.

Sincerely,
