TCHS students traveled to DC this spring
By Eric Romero, TCHS student
From May 4-9, ten TCHS students took a 6-day trip to Washington D.C. with the Institute for Civility in Government.
"Going to Washington D.C. was an amazing feeling," Tyler Parish, sophomore, said. "I would never have thought I'd be able to go in my life."
The trip was sponsored by the Texas City Rotary Club and the school's chapter of Young Americans for Liberty. A major purpose of the trip is to help students learn to communicate their differences in a civil manner. Before the trip, the students selected three topics they wanted to discuss with their elected officials. The topics chosen were Immigration, Energy, and Healthcare.
"We got to choose several subjects that concerned us and our generation as a whole," James Wells, sophomore, said. "We also got to talk to experts that gave us an insight within each subject which was very helpful when coming up with our questions and statements."
The students were also able to visit the historic sites and museums that D.C. had to offer.
"My favorite part was the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier," Brianna Martinez said. "It was a very inspiring ritual that shows how dedicated people are to our country."
After six days visiting Washington D.C. the students came back to continue practicing what they learned on the trip.
"With the help of the Institute for Civility we learned how to compromise with each other and see how people on Capitol Hill struggle to come to a decision," said junior Jeffrey Brown. "I would definitely go again if I had the chance."

Front Row: James Wells, Ciera Moya, Selena Hernandez. Second Row: Eric Romero, Brianna Martinez, and Jeffrey Brown. Third Row: Tyler Parish, Matt Gomez, Kolbi Darden, and Samantha Burdick. |
