"Hospitality
market gets stronger each & every week"
Maybe the recession
is truly over especially for the hospitality industry. Smith Travel
Research (STR) reports the U.S. hotel industry metrics are gaining
traction each and every week.
Last week,
STR reported the hotel industry's once again reported a 14.4%
increase in revenue per available room for the week ending October
2, 2010. The industry's occupancy increase 9.8% to 61.2% and the
average daily rate was up to $99.80.
Among the
chain-scale segments, the luxury segment reported the largest
increases in all key performance metrics. Occupancy rose 14.1% to
70.8%, Average Daily Rate was up 5.8% to $249.64 and the Revenue
per Available room increased 20.7% to $1766.70.
Once again,
New York City reported a significant increase in its average daily
rate increasing by 17.2% to $275.29.
October 7th
was second scheduled opening (originally scheduled to open in
August) for the long awaited Aloft Harlem, located at 2300
Frederick Douglass Boulevard. The hotel announced the official
opening will take place on Thursday, October 21, the same day the
Brooklyn's first Aloft, The Aloft Brooklyn, at 216 Duffield Street
in Downtown Brooklyn Hotelchatter.com reports the first available
day for a room at the hotel in Harlem is November 4th
with the average daily rate for a room with a king bed is $239 with
rates increasing to $319 before charges and taxes.
This summer,
Times Square welcomed the Intercontinetal Hotel to West 44th
Street. October 25th is the scheduled opening Times
Square newest hotel, The Pearl New York, the 94 room hotel, located
233 West 49th Street, with opening room rates at $280,
offering a complimentary continental breakfast
Chelsea is the home of the
Doubletree Hotel New York City Chelsea at 128 West 29th
Street, and later this month the Marriott's Fairfield Inn &
Suites New York Manhattan/Chelsea is scheduled to open at 116 West
28th Street. The Fairfield Inn is located across the
street from the Hotel Indigo New York City, at 127 West
28th Street which opened earlier this year.
26
New Schools, with 17,000 new seats added in the City for new school
year"
Last
month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein
announced the opening of 26 new locations, adding more than 17,000
new seats for the 2010-2011 school year. The new buildings, annexes
and leased space represent the most new classroom seats to come on
line in one year since the School Construction Authority was
creating (in 1988) and putting the Department of Education on track
to add nearly 100,000 new school seats across the City by
2013.
The
School Construction Authority (SCA) manages new construction and
renovation of the schools. The construction of the 17,000 new seats
was largely funded through the $13.1 billion school capital plan of
2005-09. Funded equally by the City and the State, it's been the
largest school construction effort in New York history, and has
enable SCA to renovate 86 percent of public school buildings
throughout the five boroughs.
The
geographic breakdown of the new schools includes six schools in the
Bronx and Brooklyn, eight in Manhattan and six schools in
Queens.
More
than 80,000 new school seats have been constructed since 2003
including 19,198 in the Bronx, 18,900 in Brooklyn, 16,900 in
Manhattan, 30,233 in Queens and 4,669 in Staten
Island.
