ALUMNAE NEWS
Christmas Tea

Christmas seems like it was ages ago, but what a nice time we had at the very special annual Christmas Tea. It is such a treasure to celebrate big traditions such as this, Reunion Weekend, and The SUA Ball. We continue to build new traditions, like the alumnae bowling night and having our most recent college graduate alumnae back to campus! We hope the holidays, new year, and now the Lenten Season have been and continue to be full of blessings for you and your families.

It doesn't get much cuter than this matching Buckley bunch!

Cyclebar Fanatics!

Friends who ride together have WAY more fun!

Just weeks before our SUA Alumnae event at CycleBar, Catherine (Kitty) Miller '06 and Fiona McCloy '06 were interviewed by CycleBar about being friends who ride together and keep each other accountable on and off the bike!

Why CycleBar?
Kitty: I like the ease and convenience of CycleBar. They provide towels, water, shoes, all equipment---I simply have to show up. I know in 50 minutes, I will get a great work out and have instant access to my Cycle stats. Additionally, CycleBar has invested in state of the art technology. They have a user friendly, informative website which makes scheduling classes incredibly easy. I also love the promotions they run. Not only do the promotions provide packages at a reduced cost, but they encourage me to ride often and be accountable. The "Buy 10, Ride 10, Get 10" promotion was my favorite. Of course I wanted to get ten free classes, so I ended up coming to CycleBar everyday which was great, it definitely kicked my fitness regime into high gear.

Fiona: Adding a CycleBar class once or twice a week to my workout routine helps me not get bored with my workouts or hit a plateau. Running is my workout of choice, but being selective about the weather I run in and preferring not to run on a treadmill for more than 3 miles, limits my workouts. CycleBar adds variety to my week and gives me fewer excuses to not workout when it's raining or snowing.

Why do you do it?
Kitty: We like to ride together as much as possible! We all are busy and have different schedules, so trying to coordinate class times is much easier in the form of a group chat. We also use the chat to discuss instructor and music preferences. Our favorite instructors are Ziad, Jordin, Sammy, and anyone who plays electronic dance music!

Fiona: I call myself a lazy workout person because I don't mind cardio, but I'll avoid any sort of weight training. It's something I constantly tell myself I'll work on, but haven't total followed through. The advantage of CycleBar classes is that they make me use your own body weight to move on the bike or even sometimes utilize an actual weighted bar. It's a way of making me add lifting to my workout regimen without me whining about it or only doing 2 reps.

We love the idea of the "buddy system." What would you tell others to think about?
Kitty: I like trying new workouts or exercise classes with another person. Cycling was certainly a new territory for me so it was helpful to have a group to rely on and encourage me. Our group chat really originated as a place to discuss class times and scheduling but now it has developed into a buddy/support system. We hold each other accountable and genuinely get excited about new promotions and opportunities CycleBar is offering.

Fiona: Paying for a class and reserving a bike is part of the motivation to actually show up, but having at least one friend also go means you can't skip. It's another way to hold yourself accountable. It's also nice to have someone to look over at when you're reaching a high gear on a hill and all you want to do is whisper one curse word under your breath.

Congrats to Bryn Kehoe '04 on her LaRosa's 2014 Hall of Fame Induction!

Deni Tato '74 and her business were featured in Cincinnati Business Courier Second Act where she mentioned SUA: "If you had $100,000 to give to charity, which one would you choose and why? I would donate the money to St. Ursula Academy. I believe strongly in same sex schools for grades nine through 12. Attending SUA was a transformational experience for me. I wouldn't be sitting where I am today without that experience."
Alumnae owned La Petite Pierre was nominated for best restaurant, best brunch, best new happy hour and best catering services in Best of Cincinnati 2015. Owner Michele Vollman '75 hosted 30 alumnae for a delightful dinner event on January 28th.

Students Answer Pope Francis' Call to be a Prophet; Students Send Letter and Create a Stole for the Pope

The students are embracing this year's school theme of "becoming a Prophet" by answering the Pope's call to "share ideas that could contribute to the Church's outreach to young women and support them in meeting today's challenges."

Students in religion classes taught by Bill Burnside, Joanne Koehl, Deanna Cahill, and Jennifer Mertens '05 recently participated in "Voices of Young Catholic Women," a project sponsored by St. Mary's College. Young women across the country were encouraged to write letters to the Pope explaining the challenges for Catholic women living in a modern world. Additionally, they were asked to share ideas for new, engaging ministries that may be relevant for women living in a society today where violence against woman has become all too common. Students reflected on the pressures of teen media culture and the challenges they face in regards to body image, violence against women, or integrating a healthy sexuality. Some wrote about the lack of confidence, depression, and eating disorders that many teenage women experience.

The project also asked for other forms of creative expressions. Ms. Mertens wanted the students to be able to offer something to Pope Francis that would represent the hopes and dreams of young women more broadly. Creating a stole for Pope Francis came to mind as a symbolic gesture which could represent the gifts of young women -- and also be easily transported to Rome. Assistant Principal of Academics Mary Ann Meyer developed the design for a stole and students cut and pieced the fabric design together. Maria Rosa Arbona (former biology teacher) then embroidered and sewed the pieces together to form a beautiful stole. There were many women working on this project across the generations, which was significant!
