10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

J- Lot Closure, Effective Monday, Jan. 13 at 7 am 

 

Effective Monday, January 13, 2014 at 7 a.m., the SHC/LPCH parking lot L-9 (the J-Lot), located on Quarry Extension near the entrance to the Emergency Department, will close permanently. Alternative parking options are available for staff, physicians and employees. The parking lot is closing in order to accommodate construction of a new steam plant to serve both Hospitals. New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018

 

Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018.

What to expect this weekend (1/11-1/12)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am- 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Work to finish demolishing the former MRI offices near the hospital will continue on Saturday, 1/11. Tunnel excavation and shoring work will also continue.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Foundation pile installation will continue on the new hospital site; concrete prep work will continue on the parking garage site.

 

Weekday work (1/13-1/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Work to finish demolishing the former MRI offices near the hospital will continue. Off haul will continue to remove concrete walls and footings. Tunnel excavation and shoring work will continue.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation, forming work, rebar and placement preparations for the foundation will continue. Waterproofing work will also occur.  

 

New Parking Garage: Forming work, rebar and placement of the garage concrete structure will continue next week. An off-hours concrete pour may occur on Tuesday, 1/14.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/18-1/19)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Demolition of the MRI offices and tunnel excavation may continue near the hospital on Saturday, 1/18.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue next Saturday, 1/18. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/11-1/12)

Hours of Construction: 8 am to 6 pm

 

Jobsite trailers will be removed on Friday, 1/10 and Saturday, 1/11.

 

No work is currently scheduled to occur on the Packard site this Sunday, 1/12.

 

Weekday work (1/13-1/17)

Hours of Construction: 7 am to 6 pm; off hours dirt off haul will occur

 

The right hand turn lane on eastbound Welch Road near the Packard Children's construction site will be closed intermittently in order to accommodate steel deliveries onto the site. During this time, the remaining lane of traffic on eastbound Welch Road will remain open and will accommodate all through traffic, including right turns onto Quarry Road. As steel deliveries occur, the turn lane will be blocked to through traffic by traffic delineators, cones, and flagmen. Steel deliveries may occur from 6 am to 6 pm, Monday-Saturday.

 

The sidewalk adjacent to the Packard Children's construction site has been closed due to the steel deliveries. A pedestrian detour is in place.

 

Structural steel welding, waterproofing, rebar installation, concrete formwork and placement will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. 

 

The tower crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/18-1/19)

Hours of Construction: 8 am to 6 pm

 

A mat slab pour may occur on Saturday, 1/18. No work is scheduled to occur on Sunday, 1/19. 

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
