10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/12-1/13)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Hot water line trenching and installation will occur this Saturday, 1/12, on Welch Road at North Pasteur Drive.

 

Weekday work (1/14-1/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Gas line lateral installations at 1100-1180 Welch are nearing completion.

 

Communication duct bank installation work will continue near 1000 Welch Road.

 

Hot water line work between North and South Pasteur Drive will be accelerated until completed (approx. 3 weeks) to allow for improved traffic flow conditions on Welch Road.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/19-1/20)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Hot water line trenching and installation work will continue on Welch Road at North Pasteur Drive next Saturday, 1/19.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/12-1/13)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 pm-5 am

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (1/14-1/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

The demolition of Parking Structure 3 (PS3), the former patient and visitor garage at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, will continue next week. Intermittent off haul from the demolition site will continue next week between 7 am-12 noon. (These hours have been adjusted to improve Welch/Pasteur traffic flow).

 

Abatement will continue at 1101 Welch Road. The buildings are scheduled to be torn down on 2/4 in order to make way for the new Stanford Hospital facility.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/19-1/20)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

  

What to expect this weekend (1/12-1/13)

Hours of Construction Activity: 5 am - 10 pm

 

On Saturday, 1/12, an Emergency Department detour will be in effect from 6 am-10 pm in order to accommodate the placement of  a transformer on Quarry Extension as part of the Packard Expansion project. Signage and flagmen will be on site. Employees and physicians with access to the J lot across from the ED should follow the ED detour to access the lot during this time.

 

Temporary Detour  

 

Excavation on-site and dirt off-haul will occur (pending weather and soils condition) over the weekend. Tie back work may also occur on the expansion site.

 

Weekday work (1/14-1/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Trenching will begin next week on the expansion site as part of the oxygen line installation. Trenching will occur in three phases in order to minimize impacts to the loading dock operations.

 

Work to core for hot water and fire alarm conduit will continue inside of the hospital in the ceiling of the ground floor stairwells next week.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Intermittent dirt off haul will occur from the Packard Expansion site through the end of January.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/19-1/20) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7  am - 3:30 pm

 

No work is currently scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

Hoover Garage

May 2012-July 2013

 

Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, has been renovated and opened December 2012 to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus. The garage will enable additional parking for patients and staff.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/12-1/13)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am- 4 pm

 

Work will continue on the site on Saturday, 1/12, to construct the new parking garage.

 

Weekday work (1/14-1/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work will continue next week to place rebar; waterproofing work will also continue. Concrete will be poured for the final level of the parking garage.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/19-1/20)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am- 4 pm

 

Work will continue next Saturday, 1/19, to construct the new parking garage.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
