10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

J- Lot Closure

 

The SHC/LPCH parking lot L-9 (the J-Lot), located on Quarry Extension near the entrance to the Emergency Department, has closed permanently in order to accommodate construction of a new steam plant to serve both Hospitals. Tree relocation is currently under way on the site. Alternative parking options are available for staff, physicians and employees. Employees interested in alternative parking information should email  parking@stanfordmed.org

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018

 

Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/18-1/19)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am- 6 pm

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Foundation pile installation will continue on the new hospital site; concrete prep work will continue on the parking garage site.

 

Dirt will be off-hauled from the new hospital construction site on Saturday, 1/18, beginning at 9 am.

 

Weekday work (1/20-1/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm

 

On Monday, 1/20, concrete work will continue on the parking garage site.

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Work to finish demolishing the former MRI offices near the hospital will resume on 1/23 and continue through the end of the month. Off haul will continue to remove concrete walls and footings. Tunnel excavation and shoring work will continue.

 

New Hospital: Hospital foundation pile installation, waterproofing, forming work, rebar and placement preparations for the foundation will continue.  

 

An all-day concrete pour is scheduled to occur on 1/23.

 

New Parking Garage: Forming work, rebar and placement of the garage concrete structure will continue next week. Concrete pours will continue.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/25-1/26)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Demolition and tunnel excavation will continue near the hospital on Saturday, 1/25.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue next Saturday, 1/25. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/18-1/19)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8 am to 6 pm; overnight concrete pour from 10:30 pm on 1/17 through 1 pm on 1/18.

  

An overnight mat slab pour is scheduled to occur on Friday, 1/17 at 10:30pm and will continue through 1 pm on Saturday, 1/18.

 

No work is currently scheduled to occur on the Packard site this Sunday, 1/19.

 

Weekday work (1/20-1/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am to 6 pm; off hours dirt off haul may occur.

 

Structural steel welding, waterproofing, rebar installation, concrete formwork and placement will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. 

 

A concrete pour will occur during regular construction hours on Tuesday, 1/21.

 

The tower crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.

 

What to expect next weekend (1/25-1/26)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8 am to 6 pm

 

A mat slab concrete placement is scheduled for Saturday, 1/25, at 12:01am.

 

No work currently scheduled for Sunday, 1/26.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
