10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/26-1/27)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Utility work will occur on Saturday, 1/26, on Welch Road at North/South Pasteur Drive. Dirt hauling will also occur from the Pasteur stockpile on both Saturday and Sunday.

 

Weekday work (1/28-2/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Hot water line work between North and South Pasteur will continue on accelerated shifts until complete on 1/28 (Monday).

 

City of Palo Alto performed switch overs are scheduled to occur next week.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

No work will occur.

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (1/26-1/27)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 pm - 5 am

 

Cement will be added to the dirt and gravel paving along Welch Road near PS-4 this Saturday, 1/26 (weather permitting).

 

Weekday work (1/28-2/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Demolition of Parking Structure 3, the former patient and visitor garage at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, will continue next week.

 

Abatement work and the boxing and storing of trees will continue at 1101 Welch. The buildings are scheduled to be demolished the first week of February.

 

The construction of the second part of the FIM-1 valet lot near the School of Medicine on South Pasteur Drive will continue. Crews will be working 10 hour workdays during the week and 8 hour work days on Saturdays until the lot is completed. Work will occur to fence the remaining site and remove landscaping. Work will also occur to pothole and identify existing utilities. Some truck deliveries will occur on the site next week.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work on the FIM-1 lot is expected to continue next Saturday, 2/2. 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

 

What to expect this weekend (1/26-1/27)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work will occur over the weekend to backfill at the tunnel area on the Packard Expansion site. Oxygen line work will also continue. Excavation and off haul of soil will also continue.

 

Weekday work (1/28-2/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Oxygen line work will continue next week.

 

Waterproofing work will also begin at the tunnel area.

 

Some preparation work to support future pedestrian rerouting inside and outside of the hospitals may begin.

 

Face cut excavation will continue on the site as well bench cut work at the W wall and excavation activities.

 

Intermittent dirt off haul will occur from the Packard Expansion site through the end of January.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/2-2/3) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Excavation, waterproofing and oxygen line work are scheduled to continue next weekend.

Hoover Garage

May 2012-July 2013

 

Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, has been renovated and opened December 2012 to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive extension of the Medical Center campus. The garage will enable additional parking for patients and staff.

What to expect this weekend (1/26-1/27)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am- 4 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (1/28-2/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

The concrete slab on grade work is complete. Concrete precast panels will be delivered and panel erection will begin. This work will continue through the spring.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am- 4 pm

 

Work will continue next Saturday, 2/2, to construct the new parking garage.

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
