Construction to affect Stanford Hospital routes & parking as of Nov. 1 

 

Effective Nov. 1, Stanford Hospital's existing patient and visitor parking lot, Parking Structure 3 (PS3), will be closed permanently, allowing for upcoming construction for the future Stanford Hospital.
 
Stanford Hospital visitor parking will now be in the Pasteur Visitor Garage/PS 4, located at the intersection of South Pasteur Drive and Welch Road.  

For patients and visitors to the Blake Wilbur Clinics, the Advanced Medicine Center/Cancer Center and the Ambulatory Surgery Center, access to Blake Wilbur Drive will now be from Welch Road. Parking for these Blake Wilbur Drive programs is Valet Only.

10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (10/27-10/28)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work will occur on Ambulance Drive on Saturday. The SW emergency exit door of Blake Wilbur Clinic will be closed on Saturday for this work. This has been coordinated with hospital operations.

 

Weekday work (10/29-11/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Excavation will continue for the communication vault work on outboard Welch Rd. This is occurring near the properties of 900, 770, 700 and 730 Welch

 

Blake Wilbur Drive closes from Pasteur on 10/31. Opens from Welch on 11/1.

 

Trenching will also continue in the Welch/Quarry intersection. Some work may occur outside of the construction fencing. Flaggers will be present as needed and traffic will continue to have thru access.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/3-11/4)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility (Make-Ready Site)

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (10/27-10/28)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 7 pm

 

Construction for the temporary parking lot in the CCSR area will continue on both Saturday and Sunday.

 

In Parking Structure 4, crews will be working Saturday at LL 3.  This will not be noise or dust producing.

 

Weekday work (10/29-10/11/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Blake Wilbur Drive closes from Pasteur on 10/31 and opens from Welch on 11/1. Signage on Sand Hill and throughout the medical center corridor will inform new wayfinding for Blake Wilbur Drive and the new Pasteur Visitor Parking Lot located at the intersection of Welch and Pasteur Roads.

 

Construction for the temporary parking lot in the CCSR area will continue. Asphalt and striping are both scheduled for 10/31.

 

Storm and sewer trenching will continue in North Pasteur Drive near the exit to Parking Structure 3 (PS-3). Night work will continue as needed. Access will be maintained out of the garage at all times.

 

Promenade work continues.  Pedestrian access thru the Promenade and Garden Entrance will be closed effective 11/1. Fencing will be put up that morning to close the area. Detour signage will be posted.

 

Bicycle cages in PS3 and bicycle lockers in the SHC garden entrance will close 10/31. All bikes must be removed from this cage and these lockers before midnight 10/30. New lockers will be located on the other side of Stanford Hospital, in front of the East Pavilion along Quarry Extension. Additional lockers will be located in the back courtyard of Packard Children's and the Cancer Center. For questions, email bike-information@stanford.edu.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (10/27-10/28)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work will occur on both Saturday and Sunday. This includes excavation and off-haul, rebar installation, water proofing surface prep for stripped walls, as well as backfill at east side of tunnel. 

 

Weekday work (10/29-11/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 6 am - 6 pm

 

Excavation and off-haul will continue.

 

NW wall shoring and NW wall tieback work continues.

 

Work will occur in the intersection of Quarry Road and Quarry Extension. Some traffic lane changes will occur during this time to accommodate construction. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic flow. Access will be maintained to the ED at all times.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/3-11/4)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Excavation and off-haul work will likely be scheduled to occur. 

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

Weekday work (10/29-11/2)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Interior improvements continue throughout the floors of the Pavilion and are nearing completion.

 

Foundation work and wall forming continue for the new parking garage on the Hoover Pavilion site. 

 

What to expect next weekend (10/27-10/28):

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work will likely continue on the Hoover Pavilion site next weekend.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
