This extended holiday version of the 10 day look ahead includes all anticipated construction activities through Friday, November 30, 2012. No work is scheduled to occur on Thanksgiving Day. Wishing you and yours a very happy and safe holiday season.

10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (11/17-11/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/19-11/21)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm 

*No work is scheduled to occur over the Thanksgiving Holiday

 

Excavation work will continue for the communication vault work on outboard Welch Rd. This is occurring near the properties of 900, 770, 700 and 730 Welch.

 

In order to facilitate this work, the crosswalk located closest to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital will now be moved to 730 Welch next Tuesday, 11/20. This temporary crosswalk will remain in place for approximately two weeks, after which time it will move back to its current location. Please follow the pedestrian detour signs for your safety.

 

Gas line excavation will continue next week on Welch Road. This work requires boring and the use of a vacuum truck. All work is being coordinated directly with the affected properties.

 

Trenching will also continue in the Welch/Quarry intersection. Some work may occur outside of the construction fencing. Flaggers will be present as needed and traffic will continue to have thru access.

 

The Packard Children's Hospital emergency power duct bank work is substantially complete and the WRUP crews have re-mobilized into the outboard Quarry Rd work area. Hardscape demolition inside of the K-Rail fencing will continue. The crosswalk near the L-3 parking lot will remain closed until new sidewalks and paving on outboard Quarry Rd are complete.

 

Soil will be off hauled from the 'dog leg' at North Pasteur and Welch Rd, weather permitting.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/26-11/30)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Utility work will continue as noted above on Welch and Quarry Roads during the week following Thanksgiving.

 

Beginning Monday, 11/26, work is scheduled to begin in the J lot behind the Emergency Department to relocate the cellular on wheels (COW). During this time, special badge access parkers will need to utilize the exit gate to enter and exit the lot. Security will be on site to assist with traffic flow during regular business hours. Five parking spaces will be impacted for the five days of work.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility (Make-Ready Site)

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities.

What to expect this weekend (11/17-11/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 7 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/19-11/21)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

*No work will occur over the Thanksgiving holiday

 

Next week, work will begin to demolish Parking Structure 3 (PS-3), the former patient and visitor parking lot. The parking structure must be removed, followed later this year with the demolition of 1101 Welch Road, in order to make way for the new hospital facilities.

 

In order to demolish the building, large excavators will be used to take apart the parking garage starting at the top level and crunching the material down to ground level. This process will continue one bay at a time until the structure is completely down.  Equipment will be placed on the ground to the west of the garage and work its way inward as each bay is removed.

 

Machinery and equipment will be delivered to the PS-3 site on Monday, 11/19 at 5 am and demolition work will begin as early as Tuesday, 11/20. This work is expected to take three months to complete. Regular work hours will occur between 7 am and 4 pm. Demolition work will begin closest to the Cancer Center, moving south towards the North Pasteur Drive side of the site.

 

During demolition activities, there will be noise and vibration near the site. This work will be monitored very closely to help mitigate any impacts inside of the hospital. Infection control measures are in place and will be checked continuously in order to ensure the health and safety of our patients, employees and visitors.

 

Work in the Promenade will continue including new water line and exit path construction along with ramp and stair installation. The work outside of the fence at the north end toward Wang Plaza should be completed by Wednesday, 11/21.

No work will occur over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/26-11/30)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

All New Stanford Hospital Make-Ready construction activities will continue the week following Thanksgiving unless otherwise noted above.

 

Truck hauling will begin on Wednesday, 11/28, to off haul demolition material from PS-3.

 

Work will occur on the second half of the CCSR temporary parking lot pending permits. This work will take three weeks to complete (weather permitting) and require 10 hour shifts six days a week.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

North/West wall shoring and North/West wall tieback work will continue on Saturday.

 

Weekday work (11/19-11/21)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 6 am - 6 pm

*No work will occur over the Thanksgiving holiday

 

North/West wall shoring and North/West wall tieback work will continue.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/24-11/25) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

No work will occur over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/26-11/30)

Hours of Construction Activity: 6 am - 6 pm; nighttime work on 11/27 at 10 pm until 5.30 am on 11/28

 

All Packard Children's Hospital expansion activities listed will continue unless otherwise noted above.

 

Beginning Tuesday, 11/27, at 10 pm a crane lift will be in place on Welch Road in order to lift new contractor trailers onto the Packard expansion site. This work is scheduled to be complete by 5 am on Wednesday, 11/28. During this time, temporary traffic closures and detours may occur on Welch Road. 

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm 

 

Work will continue over the weekend on the Hoover Pavilion site.

 

Weekday work (11/19-11/23)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

*Work is not anticipated to occur over the Thanksgiving holiday but may be required.

 

Work to finish the interiors of the Pavilion will continue next week.

 

At 8 am on Tuesday, 11/20, a crane is scheduled to lift and place the finial on top of the Pavilion.

 

Foundation work for the new parking garage is nearing completion. Wall forming will continue for the garage.

  

What to expect next weekend (11/24-11/25)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work may continue on the Hoover Pavilion site next weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/26-11/30)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work to finish the interiors of the Pavilion will continue next week.

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
