10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Temporary Road Closures Due to Stanford University Construction 

Beginning December 9, 2013

 

Beginning December 9, 2013, a section of Welch Road (between S. Pasteur Drive and Campus Drive) will be closed for approximately four months. This closure is due to the Stanford Energy Sustainable Innovations (SESI) project's ongoing utility construction to serve the Stanford University campus and the new hospitals. New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018

 

Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018. 

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekday work (11/27-11/29)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm 

*No work is scheduled to occur on Thursday, 11/28, and Friday, 11/29, due to the Thanksgiving Holiday

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel shoring pile installation will continue on Wednesday, 11/27.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation and garage concrete placement will continue on Wednesday, 11/27.

 

Dirt will be off hauled from the site as needed this Wednesday, 11/27.

 

What to expect this weekend (11/30-12/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur on the NSH construction site this weekend.

 

Next week's activities:

 

Weekday work (12/2-12/6) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel shoring excavation, tie-backs and lagging work will occur next week. This work may cause some noise inside of the hospital.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation and foundation excavation will occur. Garage concrete placement will continue. A concrete pour will occur next week within regular construction hours.

 

Dirt will be off hauled from the site as needed.

 

What to expect next weekend (12/7-12/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Tunnel shoring excavation, tie backs and lagging work may occur. This work may cause noise inside of the hospital.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: No work is scheduled to occur on the new hospital or parking garage footprints next weekend.

 

Dirt off haul may occur as needed. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekday work (11/27-11/29)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am to 6 pm 

*No work currently scheduled for Thursday (11/28) and Friday (11/29) due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

 

Rebar installation, waterproofing, concrete formwork, and bench cutting work will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. The tower crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork.

 

Material deliveries will continue.

 

Dirt off haul will continue on Wednesday, 11/27, as needed.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.

 

What to expect this weekend (11/30-12/1)

Hours of Construction Activity: 8 am to 6 pm

 

No work is currently scheduled to occur on Saturday, 11/30. The Packard Children's Expansion contractors will be on site Sunday, 12/1, to scan the basement slab.

 

What to expect next week (12/2-12/6)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am to 6 pm

 

Rebar installation, waterproofing, concrete formwork, and bench cutting work will continue on the Packard expansion site next week. All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. The tower crane will be in use to install rebar columns and formwork.

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
