Changes to Stanford Hospital & Clinics Routes and Parking as of Nov. 1 

Stanford Hospital's patient and visitor parking lot, Parking Structure 3 (PS3), is closed permanently for construction of the future Stanford Hospital.

 
Stanford Hospital Patient and Visitor Parking is now located in the Pasteur Visitor Garage/PS 4, at the intersection of South Pasteur Drive and Welch Road.  

Patients and Visitors to the Blake Wilbur Clinics, the Advanced Medicine Center/Cancer Center and the Ambulatory Surgery Center, access Blake Wilbur Drive from Welch Road. Parking for these Blake Wilbur Drive programs is Valet Only.

10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (11/10-11/11)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 3:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/12-11/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 5:30 pm

 

At 4 am on Tuesday, 11/13, one remaining power pole will be removed in front of 777 Welch. This work will take about 1-2 hours to complete.

 

Excavation work will continue for the communication vault work on outboard Welch Rd. near the properties of 900, 770, 700 and 730 Welch. In order to facilitate this work, the crosswalk located closest to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital will be adjusted temporarily next week.

 

On Tuesday, 11/13, the current crosswalk to Packard Children's Hospital in front of 750/770 Welch Rd will be moved to 730 Welch. This temporary crosswalk will remain in place for approximately two weeks, after which time it will move back to its current location. Please follow the pedestrian detour signs for your safety.

 

Gas line excavation will continue next week on Welch Road.

 

Trenching will also continue in the Welch/Quarry intersection. Some work may occur outside of the construction fencing. Flaggers will be present as needed and traffic will continue to have thru access.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/17-11/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility (Make-Ready Site)

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities.

What to expect this weekend (11/10-11/11)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 7 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (11/12-11/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

The SHC sanitary sewer will be rerouted into the new pump station on Tuesday, 11/13, at 2 am.

 

On Wednesday,11/14, work is scheduled to occur on the second half of the CCSR temporary parking lot. This work will take three weeks to complete (weather permitting).

 

Work will begin to abate the PS-3 parking garage next week in preparation for future demolition of the parking structure.

 

The Promenade and the Garden Entrance to Stanford Hospital & Clinics are now closed. Work in the Promenade will continue including new water line and exit path construction along with ramp and stair installation.  

 

What to expect next weekend (11/17-11/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work will occur in the CCSR temporary parking lot next weekend.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (11/10-11/11)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Concrete pour work will occur on the Packard expansion site over the weekend. This work will require concrete truck deliveries to the construction site every 15 minutes beginning at 6 am on Saturday, 11/10. Work will continue until about 3 pm.

 

North/West wall shoring and North/West wall tieback work will also continue on Saturday. Some additional excavation work will also continue. Dirt will be off-hauled from the site.

 

Weekday work (11/12-11/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 6 am - 6 pm

 

Next week, excavation and off-haul will continue from the Packard expansion site.

 

North/West wall shoring and North/West wall tieback work will also continue. Excavation will also continue.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building for the next two months. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/17-11/18) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Next Saturday, 11/17, additional concrete pouring will occur on the site. This work will require concrete truck deliveries on site every 15 minutes. Please be cautious of trucks on the road.  

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3 pm 

 

Work will continue over the weekend on the Hoover Pavilion site.

 

Weekday work (11/12-11/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work to finish the interiors of the Pavilion will continue next week.

 

Foundation work for the new parking garage is nearing completion. Wall forming will continue for the garage.

 

What to expect next weekend (11/17-11/18)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3 pm

 

Work will likely continue on the Hoover Pavilion site next weekend.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
