10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (12/15-12/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Paving will occur over the weekend in the Quarry Rd/Quarry Extension intersection near the Emergency Department. Access will be maintained to the ED at all times.

 

Weekday work (12/17-12/21)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Gas line excavation will continue next week on Welch Road. This work requires boring and the use of a vacuum truck. All work is being coordinated directly with the affected properties. New gas main activations will occur in phases over the coming weeks. Some shutdowns may be required and are being coordinated by the City of Palo Alto which each affected property.

 

Trenching will continue in the Welch/Quarry intersection. Some work may occur outside of the construction fencing. Flaggers will be present as needed and traffic will continue to have thru access.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend. 

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility (Make-Ready Site)

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities.

What to expect this weekend (12/15-12/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (12/17-12/21)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

On Monday, 12/17, 1101 Welch Road will be vacated in order to accommodate the future construction of the new Stanford Hospital facility. Permanent fencing will be erected around the property to secure the site. No vehicular or pedestrian traffic through the 1101 Welch Road lot - either from Blake Wilbur Drive or via Welch Road- will be allowed. Please plan your route accordingly.

 

Work will continue to demolish Parking Structure 3 (PS-3), the former patient and visitor parking lot. The parking structure must be removed, followed later this year with the demolition of 1101 Welch Road, in order to make way for the new hospital facilities.

 

Trucks will continue to haul off concrete and rebar from the demolition site.

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

  

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

 

What to expect this weekend (12/15-12/16)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Due to the CT/MRI remodel on the ground floor of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, emergency power will be interrupted during the hours of 7 am to 3 pm on Saturday, 12/15. This emergency power work should not impact patient safety or the main operations of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

 

Work will occur at the Packard Expansion site to install rebar and piping; tie-back installation will also occur along with the installation of the second stair tower.

 

Weekday work (12/17-12/21)

Hours of Construction Activity: 6 am - 6 pm

 

Pump trucks will be onsite to facilitate the grade beam pour near the wall and lift station of the Packard expansion site.

 

Work to core for hot water and fire alarm conduit will occur inside of the hospital in the ceiling of the ground floor stairwells beginning Wednesday, 12/19. This work is scheduled to continue through 1/11/13. Noise mitigation measures, infection control measures and physical barriers will be in place during this time to minimize impact to the hospital.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Intermittent dirt off haul will occur from the Packard Expansion site through the end of January.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (12/22-12/23) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work will continue to perform the grade beam pour next weekend. Work will also continue inside of the hospital to core for hot water and fire alarm conduit in the ceiling of the ground floor stairwells.

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm 

 

Work will continue over the weekend on the Hoover Pavilion site to move tenants into the building.

 

Weekday work (12/17-12/21)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

On Monday, 12/17, clinic offices and community physicians located previously at 1101 Welch Road will open for business at their new home in the modernized Hoover Pavilion, 211 Quarry Road, Palo Alto.

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
