10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Intermittent Lane Closures on Welch Road Beginning December 23, 2013 


Welch Rd Re-OpensThe Packard Children's Expansion Project has reached an exciting milestone and is moving into the structural steel phase of construction.  In order to accommodate steel deliveries onto the site, �the right hand turn lane on eastbound Welch Road near the Packard Children's construction site will be closed intermittently beginning Monday, December 23, 2013. 

 

During this time, the remaining lane of traffic on eastbound Welch Road will remain open. As steel deliveries occur, the turn lane will be blocked to through traffic by traffic delineators, cones, and flagmen. Steel deliveries may occur from 6 am to 6 pm, Monday-Saturday.

 

The sidewalk adjacent to the Packard Children's construction site will also be closed beginning December 23rd. During this time, a pedestrian detour will be in place.Hospital employees are encouraged to use the back entrance (badge access only) of Packard Children's Hospital off of Quarry Road. Bikes may share the road with vehicles while the turn lane is occupied.  Learn more...

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

December 2012- 2018

 

Work is under way to construct the new Stanford Hospital facility in order to accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity, and meet new seismic safety standards. The 824,000 square foot hospital includes 368 individual patient rooms, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, new employee parking structure, five gardens, walking trails and a meditation room. The new hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 and open for patient care in early 2018. 

 

What to expect this weekend (12/21-12/22)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am- 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Limited Garden Entrance demolition work will continue near the hospital on Saturday, 12/21. This work will cause periodic noise inside the hospital.  Tie-back drilling will continue in the tunnel area.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Foundation pile installation will continue on the new hospital site; concrete prep work will continue on the parking garage site.

 

Weekday work (12/23-12/27)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm; no work is scheduled to occur on the site 12/24-12/25 due to the holiday

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Work to finish demolishing the former MRI offices near the hospital will continue; tunnel work will continue.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation and garage concrete placement will continue. Concrete pours on the parking garage site will continue during normal construction hours.

 

Underground utility work will continue.

 

Dirt will be off hauled from the site as needed next week.

 

What to expect next weekend (12/28-12/29)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Site work may continue near the hospital on Saturday, 12/28.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage will continue next Saturday, 12/28.

 

Weekday work (12/30/13-1/3/14)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 6 pm; no work is scheduled to occur on the site 1/1/14 due to the holiday.

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Work near the former Garden Entrance to the hospital may continue; tunnel work will continue.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Hospital foundation pile installation and garage concrete placement will continue. Concrete pours on the parking garage site will continue.

 

Underground utility work may continue.

 

Dirt will be off hauled from the site as needed.

 

What to expect the following weekend (1/7-1/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 am - 6 pm

 

Former Garden Entry/D Pod: Site work may continue near the hospital on Saturday, 1/7.

 

New Hospital and Parking Garage: Work to construct the new parking garage may continue on Saturday, 1/7. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

August 2011-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is under way. The new 521,000 square foot facility will add 150 patient beds, more healing spaces, and the latest medical technology. The Packard expansion is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

What to expect this weekend (12/21-12/22)

Hours of Construction: 8 am to 6 pm

 

Work will occur on Saturday, 12/21, to perform pile prep and repair, waterproofing, and forming and shoring. The tower crane will be in use to perform footing and foundation work.

  

No work is currently scheduled to occur on Sunday, 12/22.

 

Weekday work (12/23-12/27)

Hours of Construction: 7 am to 6 pm; no work is scheduled to occur on 12/25 due to the Christmas holiday

 

The right hand turn lane on eastbound Welch Road near the Packard Children's construction site will be closed intermittently beginning December 23, 2013 in order to accommodate steel deliveries onto the site. During this time, the remaining lane of traffic on eastbound Welch Road will remain open. Rebar installation, waterproofing, and bench cutting work will continue on the Packard expansion site next week.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. 

 

Concrete work will continue. A concrete pour is scheduled to occur on 12/24.

 

The tower crane will be in use installing rebar columns and formwork.

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.

 

What to expect next weekend (12/28-12/29)

Hours of Construction: 8 am to 6 pm

 

Site work will continue on Saturday, 12/28. Steel deliveries may occur between 6 am and 6 pm.

 

No work is currently scheduled to occur on Sunday, 12/29.

 

Weekday work (12/30/13-1/3/14)

Hours of Construction: 7am to 6pm; steel deliveries may occur between 6 am and 6 pm; no work is scheduled to occur on 1/1 due to the holiday

 

The right hand turn lane on eastbound Welch Road near the Packard Children's construction site will be closed intermittently in order to accommodate steel deliveries onto the site. The sidewalk closest to the Packard construction site will remain closed.

 

Rebar installation, waterproofing, and bench cutting work may continue on the Packard expansion site.  All work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration. 

 

Concrete work may continue.

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians: must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
