10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (2/4-2/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Hot water line work will continue on Welch road. On Monday, 2/4, the pedestrian crosswalk at 750 will be closed and relocated to 725 Welch Road (Lucile Packard Children's Hospital)in order to accommodate this portion of work. The crosswalk will remain in front of 725 Welch for two weeks.

 

Next week, Stanford University IT will be performing the first round of cable pulls as part of the completion of the Stanford IT communications work on Welch Road. All work will be performed behind the K Rail.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/9-2/10)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

A binder will be added to the dirt and gravel paving along Welch Road near PS-4 this Saturday, 2/2 (work was rescheduled due to weather conditions last weekend).

 

Work to construct the temporary valet lot on N. Pasteur Drive (FIM 1) will continue on Saturday, 2/2.

 

Weekday work (2/4-2/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

On Monday, 2/4, work will begin to reroute an existing irrigation line on North Pasteur at the service drive (adjacent to the fountain) near the entrance to Stanford Hospital & Clinics.  Flaggers will be present as needed to assist with traffic flow. This work should take one week to complete.

 

Work will also begin to install the remaining permanent fence panels around the site of the Future Stanford Hospital facility. This work should be complete by the end of the week.

 

Demolition of 1101 Welch will continue.

 

Some truck deliveries will occur at the Make-Ready site.

 

Crews will continue to construct the temporary valet lot (FIM-1) on North Pasteur Drive.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/9-2/10)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work on the temporary valet lot (FIM-1) is expected to occur Saturday, 2/9. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

 

What to expect this weekend (2/2-2/3)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Off haul of soil will continue on Saturday, 2/2.

 

Shotcrete work will also occur over the weekend; concrete trucks will be on site.

 

Oxygen line work will also continue.

 

Weekday work (2/4-2/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

Next week, crews will continue to off haul soil from the expansion site. Shotcrete work and backfill work will continue. Utility installations will occur on site.

 

Tie back work will continue next week under the hospital. This work is being coordinated directly with Packard Children's to mitigate any impacts. 

 

Oxygen line work will continue and is scheduled to be complete by the end of next week.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

Work to construct a temporary MRI facility in the parking lot of 730 Welch will continue next week. Work will include the forming of the trailer slab, and the excavation of soil.

Work is scheduled to continue on the Packard Children's expansion site next weekend.

 

Hoover Garage

May 2012-July 2013

 

Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, has been renovated and opened December 2012 to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive extension of the Medical Center campus. The garage will enable additional parking for patients and staff.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Work will continue on Saturday, 2/2, to construct the new parking garage.

 

Weekday work (2/4-2/8)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Concrete precast panels will continue to be delivered and panel erection will continue.  Panel deliveries and erection will continue through the spring.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/9/10)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Work may continue on Saturday, 2/9, to construct the new parking garage.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
