10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (2/16-2/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur this weekend.

 

Weekday work (2/19-2/22)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 3:30 pm

*No work is scheduled to occur on Monday, 2/18, due to the Presidents' Day holiday

 

On Tuesday, 2/19, the driveway exit from 770 Welch and driveway entrance to 780 Welch will be closed due to utility work on Welch Road. Vehicles will be able to continue accessing 770 Welch via Vineyard Lane. The south driveway to 780 Welch Road will remain open. These closures are scheduled to remain in effect until 2/25.

 

The utility work on outboard Quarry Road is complete. The outboard side of Quarry Road between Welch Road and Quarry Extension will be striped on 2/19 in advance of reopening the road back to two-lane, two-way traffic on Wednesday, 2/20.

 

Hot water line work will continue on Welch Road. The pedestrian crosswalk will remain temporarily relocated in front of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (725 Welch) next week in order to accommodate this work. The crosswalk is expected to return back to its regular location near 750/770 Welch on 3/1.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (2/16-2/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 pm-5 am

 

Work will continue to construct the temporary valet parking lot (FIM-1) on S. Pasteur Drive near the School of Medicine on Saturday, 2/16.

 

Weekday work (2/19-2/22)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

*No work is scheduled to occur on Monday, 2/18, due to the Presidents' Day holiday

 

Demolition of remaining concrete will continue at the 1101 Welch site.

Soil will be off hauled from the site.

 

Minimum truck deliveries are scheduled to occur next week.

 

Work will continue to construct the temporary valet parking lot (FIM-1) on S. Pasteur Drive near the School of Medicine

 

What to expect next weekend (2/23-2/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

Work to pave the temporary valet lot (FIM-1) is expected to occur next Saturday, 2/23. 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

 

What to expect this weekend (2/16-2/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Concrete pour work will occur on the site over the weekend. A crane will be in use on the construction site.

 

Off haul of soil will continue over the weekend.

 

Weekday work (2/19-2/22)*

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 5pm

*No work is scheduled to occur on Monday, 2/18, due to the Presidents' Day holiday

 

Next week, construction crews will continue to off haul dirt from the site.

Soldier piles will be going in near the Falk Building and Packard Children's beginning as early as 2/19. This work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is scheduled to be completed on 2/28.

 

Tie back drilling, excavation and shot crete work will also continue next week.

 

A sewer shutdown is planned for 2/19.

 

Utility work will continue near the Stanford Hospital & Clinics side of the Falk Building. Access to the Falk Building will be maintained at all times via the Stanford Hospital side of the building. Pedestrian detour signage is in place.

 

Work will continue in the parking lot of 730 Welch Road to construct a temporary MRI facility.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/23-2/24) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work is scheduled to occur on the Packard expansion site next weekend.

 

Hoover Garage

May 2012-July 2013

 

Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, has been renovated and opened December 2012 to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive extension of the Medical Center campus. The garage will enable additional parking for patients and staff.

Concrete precast panels will continue to be delivered next week and panel erection will continue.  Panel deliveries and erection will continue through the spring.

 

What to expect next weekend (2/16-2/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5.30 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
