10 Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities

 

The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway. Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Please note that that the scope of work and dates of work are subject to change without notice, especially due to weather impacts.

Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (3/16-3/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Hot water pipe installation will occur on Welch Road this weekend.

 

Weekday work (3/18-3/22)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Hot water line work will continue on Welch Road next week.

 

Partial driveway closures at 1000 and 1100 Welch will occur over the next two weeks in order to accommodate hot water line work. Tenant communications have been coordinated with the affected properties.

 

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (3/23-3/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend.

 

New Stanford Hospital Facility 

March 2012-March 2013

 

The New Stanford Hospital facility site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes surface demolition and utility work on North Pasteur Drive, and the demolition of Parking Structure 3 and 1101 Welch in order to make way for the new hospital facilities. 

 

This week's activities:

 

What to expect this weekend (3/16-3/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 9 pm - 5 am

 

Concrete will be poured for the North retaining wall this Saturday, 3/16.

 

Weekday work (3/18-3/22)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Foundation work will continue on the North wall of the Make-Ready site next week.

 

Off haul from the 1101 Welch site will occur next week.

 

The portion of Blake Wilbur Drive near North Pasteur Drive will be demolished in order to accommodate the future hospital facility.

 

What to expect next weekend (3/23-3/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 4 pm

 

No work is scheduled to occur next weekend. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion

September 2012-December 2016

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion, which will expand Packard's ability to care for children and expectant mothers, is underway. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2016.

 

This week's activities: 

 

What to expect this weekend (3/16-3/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Site excavation and off haul will occur on the expansion site over the weekend. Pile installation will also occur.

 

Concrete trucks will be on site.

 

Weekday work (3/18-3/22)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5pm

 

Soldier piles will continue to be installed near Packard Children's Hospital next week. This drilling work is being closely coordinated with the hospital and is not anticipated to cause noise or vibration.

 

Concrete trucks will be on site for shotcrete activities.

 

Excavation work and off hauling of soil will also occur.

 

Demolition of old utilities will also occur on the expansion site.

 

Work will continue in the parking lot of 730 Welch Road to construct a temporary MRI facility.

 

Access to the rear entrance of Packard Children's will remain open throughout construction although some egress detours will be in place.

 

What to expect next weekend (3/23-3/24) 

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 3:30 pm

 

Work will occur on the Packard expansion site including soldier pile installation and excavation.

 

Drilling rigs will also mobilize on site next weekend. 

 

Hoover Garage

May 2012-July 2013

 

Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, has been renovated and opened December 2012 to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive extension of the Medical Center campus. The garage will enable additional parking for patients and staff.

What to expect this weekend (3/16-3/17)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am- 5:30 pm

 

Work may occur on site this weekend to construct the parking garage.

 

Weekday work (3/18-3/22)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5:30 pm

 

Concrete precast panels will continue to be delivered next week and panel erection will continue.  Panel deliveries and erection will continue through the spring.

 

What to expect next weekend (3/23-3/24)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7 am - 5.30 pm

 

Work may occur on the site next weekend. 

 

General Reminders

 

Motorists: please be mindful of sharing the road with bicyclists. 

 

Consider alternatives to driving, including Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle, biking, carpooling, and transit. Try the do-it-yourself commute planning tool.

 

Cyclists: please be mindful of sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians. Those who choose not to share the road and use the sidewalks must walk their bicycles.

 

Pedestrians must use the new designated crosswalks on Welch Road. Jaywalking is illegal and especially unsafe in active construction areas. Maps with new pedestrian crosswalks are available at www.SUMCRenewal.org. Thank you!
